One year he had KMart, Camby, and AI with JR Smith and Nene off the bench in 07-08, that's decent. It's hard to say unless Thibs coached both teams, you'd think Thibs could get more out of that Denver team than Karl did.

Just to blow your mind, that team went 50-32 and WERE THE 8TH SEED and were swept by the Lakers in the 1st Round. Golden state went 48-34 and finished 9th in the West.

edit: Ha, they had Steven Hunter from DePaul

If he wants to win he'll come play with the Bulls and take a slight pay cut. Basically the Miami Heat guys colluded together to all take slight pay cuts to team up and then players take pay cuts to play for the Heat. All of the non-Big 3 make $4 million or less.

I think the Bulls probably want to try to sign him, but they would have to make some moves to put that together. Because of the salary cap and how long these guaranteed contracts are your team is pretty much stuck until the contracts come off the books.

I've read even when they amnesty Boozer they'd still have to trade Taj to get Melo. No way to get Mirotic next year with him.

Quote:
One issue is even if the Bulls use the amnesty provision on Carlos Boozer, they won't have anywhere close to enough salary-cap space to offer Anthony a maximum contract. It would take the Bulls making go-for-broke moves like they did in 2010, when they traded Kirk Hinrich into Wizards' salary-cap space and took nothing in return for a run at LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

With next summer's salary cap projected at roughly $62 million, the Bulls could have roughly $10.7 million of salary-cap space if Boozer's $16.8 million deal is off their books. The exact number depends on how many first-round picks they add depending on whether the protections on their Bobcats' and Kings' picks come to fruition or not.

Thus, it would take a trade of, say, Taj Gibson's $8 million salary to a team with enough cap space to absorb it outright for the Bulls to make a competitive offer to Anthony. Even trading Mike Dunleavy would only get the Bulls to a possible $14 million of cap space this summer.

Quote:
The issue, it seems, is Mirotic's buyout, which is reportedly around $3.44 million, of which the Bulls are limited to paying $600,000 (anything more counts against the cap, in that if the Bulls pay Mirotic a large first-year salary it can go towards the buyout. If he signed for the mid-level exception he'd be playing on a substantial pay-cut from what he's making in Spain). Forman called the buyout "prohibitive" and Paxson said it's "a significant issue for one more year".

They should just guilt Rose into restructuring his deal.

The Bulls will have $19M in cap space if they amnesty Boozer and trade Dunleavy. By my back of the envelope math they will only have $43.6M on the books.

Melo would probably want a 5-year deal for $20 million a season or whatever the max amount of money he can get.

How many players would they have?

They would have 6 players if you counted Melo. They could fill out the rest of their roster with minimum salary players. IIRC they lose their MLE if they are under the cap.

Call me crazy, but I want the league's best scorer on my team.

If Thibbs thinks he can change him it may be worth the risk. My first instinct is he would kill the Bulls and get Thibbs fired.

That may be true, but the problem will be the same - scoring. The Bulls lose playoff games because they can't produce points against tight defense. If you simply replace Rose with Melo (and presume Rose will not be superhuman anymore, like you and I do), I don't see things changing.

Exciting possibility, but they would probably have to gut the roster to do it. If Rose comes back and can't play at a top level you've pretty much ruined your team for 5 years. Thibs will properly get fired and the Bulls will turn into the Knicks.

Rose regardless of knees should be able to hit jumpers and drive at least good enough to kick out to Taj and Melo.

The only hope for Melo is a real coach who can make him an all-around player. The Bulls have that. The question is more about how much they will have to give up to get him and what will be left on the team if he shows up and they pay max money.

No for me the only question is Melo's to answer. How much cash is enough and does he want to do what it takes to win?

If you have to dump Taj in order to get Melo then I don't want him at all. I have no problem trading the Knicks a draft pick along with Boozer's expiring deal in a sign and trade to bring him over.

Nas my friend if you believe Melo is the answer (I don't think so, with some exceptions, but let's assume he is the answer) then that's the kind of thinking that holds you back. You're repeating the same [alleged] mistakes of the past, whether it is keeping deng over trading him for KG or Kobe, keeping the Hinrich Gordon etc crew together, and so on. Taj is the new Hinrich circa 2007 - trade him now if it means getting to the next level. Remember, he's like 28 or 29, not some raw talent waiting to dominate for the next five to ten years.

I don't think Melo is the answer. LeBron is though. I would trade everyone on the roster (reluctantly Noah too) in order to get him. I would do the same for Durant. IMO getting Melo and getting rid of Taj doesn't make the Bulls better.

We are not getting Lebron or Durant and Love is not the answer. The only chance for 3-4 years is that Wade just is done and Bosh is just Taj. And Durant is alone as Westbrook is done. Then adding Melo gives us a punchers chance. Only other way is you better pray Mirotic is Dirk and we get really lucky drafting.

If this team had Kevin Love right now, they would probably be a serious title contender.

Was listening to radio today and can't cite the source but they said Love has same interest in defense as Melo and Boozer.

It's definitely a meatball thought here, but I'd probably rather keep Noah then trade him and win a title.

Trade him for a superstar if it's on the table. Been saying it since the end of last year's season.

It's a bad year to extol Melos ability to take teams to the playoffs. Two guys(!) recently combined for 120 points against the Bobcats, Melo being one of those guys, yet if the season ended today that Charlotte team is in while the Knicks, led by Melo, predictably have no chance.

Love is younger, and I assume less of a ball stopping obstruction on offense than Melo. Melo cannot be the best player on a championship team.

Vegan this lead teams to a playoffs or ring is silly. I am not asking his to do anything other than what he does now. Fill up the basket and do what else he is able with Thibs. This whole leading people thing is crap. Lebron has not led shit. He went to Miami to work together with three other guys.

Ok well by that logic any year is a bad year to extol Love's ability to take his team to the playoffs.

Love is not an unselfish player by any means.

And if Dirk and Rasheed Wallace could be the best player on a championship team, then of course Melo could. ____ can't be the best player on a championship team is usually false if we are talking about superstar players.
