Stewart has gained acclaim as an acerbic, satirical critic of personality-driven media shows, in particular those of the U.S. media networks such as CNN, Fox News Channel, and MSNBC.[8] Critics say Stewart benefits from a double standard: he critiques other news shows from the safe, removed position of his "fake news" desk.[9][10] Stewart agrees, saying that neither his show nor his channel purports to be anything other than satire and comedy. In spite of its self-professed entertainment mandate, The Daily Show has been nominated for news and journalism awards.

wikipedia

In this case I do not think the Wiki info is terribly controversial.

Because you agree with it.

I could start a wiki page for "pitt mike". I could say that you molest collies. That doesn't make it true.

Ailes I have seen quoted as saying he only wants to make money and kick the shit out of the competition. I have never seen him quoted as you say that he cares nothing for the truth? I have posted in other previous threads that in fact CBS, NBC and especially MSNBC has had to broadcast retractions or were documented to put on false stories (Dan Rather and Lara Logan on 60 minutes for a couple). I have never read a documented retraction or complete proof of Fox fabrication. I have only seen people hate Fox for opinion/slant not facts. That said part of slant would be to choose to include or omit things? This is why I personally gather from multiple sources the info I use in my head.

No.

He is terribly competitive and wants to beat the "enemy" in cable news competition. That is not true?

I choose to believe that given context, and as adults, we don't have to take someone 100% seriously or 0% seriously. We can watch and decide what was serious and what was not. If someone is bullshitting or using it as a crutch, we can determine that. Not everything has to be black or white.

It is not like I argued global warming with it or statistical data of the Fed. It was Stewart's bio page.

Once again I said same thing before and agree. But you dismiss that because one of my sources is Fox.

Right. That's pretty much what I was trying to say. People are obsessed with black and white labels, and I'm not exactly sure why. I guess it just makes it easier to not have to use your brain.

Mike, you're paranoid. I didn't intentionally dismiss it. It's that, in this thread, I disagree with about everything you've said, so forgive me if I didn't quote you to agree.

It does sadden me that anyone watches any of these bullshit cable news networks and actually describes them as "credible."

Oh well this is already old and it is only 4:22. All I am trying to point out I guess is that Stewart is fine as is O'Reilly (for me). To better try to explain my position I will try this. If I were a political strategist for instance like an Axelrod/Rove type I would watch every possible angle/show of all this crap I could get. Including looking at compilations like Huff/Drudge. Then base an idea, thought or strategy out of my conclusions from the collective.

To view one perspective with predetermined tunnel vision leaves you out of the correct answer.

it's a slippery slope, pittmike. there are very few true news outlets, and pretty much none of them come from our airwaves or newspapers.

Read the post I just made. What you have just said is to dismiss certain sources of information. No you sound like someone that only listens to one source (like a Rush fan you certainly would despise) and run with only that.

Therefore I choose more sources as I agree. The Economist used to be good. Some European stuff as well but they slant their own to their degree.

In this thread I said I prefer Fox for my own specific reasons and very clearly said I like Stewart, Colbert as well as many other sources. Once again don't lump me in with the fight against some other meatheads you rail against.

Correct. I dismiss cable news altogether. I consume news through other mediums, primarily online. If I ever miss a view from TV that I would have found interesting, I can deal with that. I guess that makes me just like a Limbaugh follower.

Sure. I'm referring to part where you deny that Ailes admitted that they have an agenda, and if they have to distort the truth, then so be it.

I agree with you about MSNBC. I don't watch it, at all. If Rachel Maddow is the best you have, then keep it.

I prefer Colbert. He's created a character that gets across a message that is more effective than everyone else. Stewart and Maher are political commentators that happen to be comedians. Stewart's contributors skits are usually the funniest part of his show. Dennis Miller's time as a comedian has been over for a while. He falls into the same category as Maher.

Yes he has an agenda. He identified the right as undeserved in media and exploited it and the numbers show it. I do not agree with you that he would distort truth. He was quoted as saying he would put the most left leaning person you can think of on his air if they had substantially better numbers than what he has now.

Now on to that Ike special.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm either a Republican apologizing Sean Hannity fan, or a Daily Kos-loving liberal, depending on who you ask here. People really don't like having "their guys" criticized, and if you do criticize, then you must be a shill for "the other guys". I find it both amusing and annoying, depending on the mood I'm in. More of the black and white world views you mentioned earlier.

It's clear you don't have any desire to actually understand the discussion.

It's not about taking someone 100% seriously.

I tried and failed. It's ok though. There's lots of things I don't understand. Like why I'm still watching Missouri/Tennessee.

Let's make this real simple.

Let's say that Bill O'Reilly says something stupid. No one ever says "Well, he's just a comedian".
Let's say that Bill Maher says something stupid. He gets defended by "Well, he's just a comedian".

Now, that's fine. However, Maher doesn't stop being a comedian when he says something else then. The same reason why his bad thought is understandable/acceptable/ignorable exists for his good thought.

To put it another way, I'm a little sick of "comedians" who do political humor putting themselves in a position where they have shelter. Stewart has basically built his brand around that. Take me seriously when it's convenient. Treat me as an entertainer when it's convenient.

Well since there wasn't a way to legitimately blame this on Obama, I see you kids have finally sucessfully derailed the discussion completely. Nice going.

BTW. I'd love to see the quote where Ailes says he would put the most left leaning person on the planet on his station 5 nights a week.

Just more playing of the Obama victim card.

bill oreilly shelters himself just as much as any comedian. if he knows hes wrong, he just starts shouting and proclaiming hes right.
