from Cheers of course! At an Ignatius fundraiser Saturday. Norm was in his Cutler jersey and donated watching a Bears game with him and Smiegel. I think it went for 10K. I think it would be a great time.

Anyway, I wasn't there in time for the auction. I was there for afterhours and Norm was still hanging around talking with people and taking pictures with anyone who wanted it well past midnight.

Good guy...very fat.

He told them he would be more than happy to go to a Bears game if they provided seats. Ignatius obviously found someone to donate 4 seats in their box and they cobbled together the outing. Those box seats have to be worth near a grand each anyway. It seems reasonable to me to pay the extra 6K to hang out with people as talented as Wendt and Smiegel exclusively for 4 hours.

I wish I could spend 10k on watching a Bears game with someone who has not been relevant in 20 years. Was Paul Reiser not available?

I don't doubt it would be interesting. But 10 grand worth of interesting? Doubtful. Is he going to blow me at the end of the night for that price?

What do you mean by connection?

I am not a guy sitting in the stands in my maroon and gold going crazy at every game.

Are you talking about a continued connectedness?

I stay close through normal alumni type things. I go to the alumni golf outing which draws about 300 other people. I go to the alumni law society stuff which draws at least that amount.

I wouldn't say anything that I do is out of the ordinary or particularly exceptional in the general population. It may be more than average but certainly no super alum.

If you've got 10 grand to spend on anyone you've got enough to spend it on anyone, ya know what I mean?

He goes because it's good business. If I were a lawyer I'd stay connected to my high school. Lots of potential customers there.

-----
If you're gonna donate 10K to the school you might as well get a good story out of it.

Funny you should say that...You know, Norm's never been married and I have never seen him pictured with a woman.

10 grand is not something I can feel comfortable throwing down. There are people out there who it is no more to them than what it is to me going out for a nice dinner.

I know Loyola has a parent/alumni big fundraising event called The Ramble that has been getting that type of donation annually for 40 years.

I didn't donate that and I wouldn't publicize it if I did. I don't pretend to live an existence where the loss of that amount of money wouldn't be felt.

There was a funny story between 2 acquaintences of mine who don't really know each other. I wasn't there so it was told to me by others. One guy has a big job and loves to big time at this. He is the guy who comes in expecting to be the top bidder of the night, irrespective of the prize. However, the prize is always on the open auction so everyone sees him bidding.

The other guy has an even bigger job and doesn't appreciate the show boating over the years. He decided in advance this would be the year to publicly show the other guy up.

Anyway, the bigger guy let the smaller guy publicly bid up an item in his usual manner. When he had topped everyone else's bid they were getting ready to close up and the bigger guy got in just before the auctioneer said sold. Well, now it was on. Everyone else was already out so it was man to man. The smaller guy didn't seem to know what was happening. The bigger guy played with him a little where he thought he'd be able to one up him 100 or so dollars until he "won". Finally, the bigger guy upped it several thousand dollars to the point the other guy was obviously uncomfortable with the amount and had to fold by sitting down.

Seems like a goofy way to do it but it was still funny when knowing the back story of the situation.

Piece of trivia. Norm is the uncle of Jason Sudeikis.

Even at our grammar school, shit goes in the thousands. My wife and some friends were going to go in on a dinner catered in some famous mansion. They were going to go up to $2000. Went for $5800 to one of the usual high rollers. I got library for the day for one my kids for $75.

Jesuits aren't going to be able to achieve NWO without some capital.

did he attend Notre dame? Thought I remember him on Letterman telling the story of going on a road trip the night before finals, which led to flunking out/dropping out? Then got a Garbage man gig,.

I'd watch the game with Smiegel. He's the one that has the great stories. Norm can stay and eat.

I see my sister dropping $1000's on various shit like this. Thats after a huge tuition bill.

All that said, my nephew wouldnt remember his shoes when walking out the door if someone didnt tell him. or I think in his case (and many others) if someone didnt put them on him

I didn't think I emphasized him enough because he wasn't there but Smiegel would be the attraction for me as well.
