I was there for a Polish Wedding anniversary. I thought it was almost as nice as Coopers Hawk

It would be pretty easy to just wait in the parking lot for a funeral to come, and follow the crowd.

"oh, how did you know Joe?"

I used to work with him a long time ago.

I wish they had told me that duck soup is not chicken soup with duck meat instead and is actually just bleeding out a duck and filling up a bowl with duck blood. Goddamn Poles.

My grandfather used to like that stuff. My grandma wouldn't touch it. I'd like to try it, but it's kind of a rare special nowadays. It might even be mythical. It's always, oh we serve that on Sundays. Or Mondays if it is Sunday.

Czarina.

gd is going to post about their famous waiter's thumb soup.

We stopped going after my husband's grandma died. It's one of the only things I don't miss about her.

Have you not been by there lately? They built probably 500 of them on property owned by the White Eagle in the last 10 years. They sold out immediately.

That area is famous for the 5+ story building with ground floor parking put together by Pontarelli or Zitella. They house empty nesters and are basically the step before a nursing home.

No, I haven't been by there lately. I can't remember the last time I was made to dine at the White Eagle, in fact. I never would have guessed it was a prime spot for condo development.

I usually hit up Czerwone Jabluszko about once every month or so. They don't usually offer czarnina though. I like White Eagle too.

Smak Tak on Elston is my go-to Polish place. Though I only go-to it once/year or so. Wife hates Polish food. And, as you know, my kids hate everything but pizza and mac&cheese.

I've been there for many funerals, but White Eagle is okay to hit up for dinner once in awhile.

I've never had czarina. I lived with my grandmother throughout my childhood, and she would eat it along with head cheese sandwiches and lard smeared over toast. She was crazy--in both good and bad ways--and I regarded her consumption of czarina as further evidence of her lunacy.

Incidentally, I have mentioned on this site before that one of the great writers in the history of Chicago--a city that boasts the richest literary tradition in the United States--is Stuart Dybek, a faculty member at Northwestern and a worthy successor to Dreiser, Sinclair, Wright and Algren. His first collection of short stories, the remarkable Childhood and Other Neighborhoods, contains a piece called "Blood Soup" that many of you would enjoy. Really, though, you should read the whole book and follow it up with The Coast of Chicago and I Sailed With Magellan, his other collections. He has solidified his position as the poet of the postindustrial city, and his work engages the relationship between class, ethnicity, individual identity and socioeconomic change in fascinating ways.

I'll keep an eye out for that! Do you think I could find it at Powell's or Seminary Co-op? I'm due for a trip back there.

Seminary Co-Op or 57th Street Books would definitely have it. In my experience, you can never tell exactly what you'll find on Powell's shelves until you get there. But that's why the place is so much fun.

I don't eat blood anything. I like an Irish breakfast but I always order it without the white or black puddings.

Come on! The black and white puddings are the Irish breakfast! Go see my girl Rosey at Lucky Grill. She'll hook you up with a proper Irish breakfast.

JORR knows everybody! He is the "Fritzy" of the CSFMB.

I say that not sarcastically either. I loved Fritzy!

What's the name of the joint on Elston Fritzie hangs out in JORR.

The procession went up Elston but I think we were a little further North from there.

I don't know where Fritzy's spot on Elston is. If I had to guess I would say it's Colletti's.

What I can tell you is he and all the boys at Lucky Magee's got fat on Saturday with a horse named Abbey Vale at Santa Anita!
