Why waste a pick on QB? Sign the next McCown and continue to target starters in the draft.

I don't believe Trestman can do what he did with McCown with just anyone. And because of money. And because the chances of a journeyman being Cutler's replacement are low. Would prefer they develop one.

Outside of Rodgers I can't think of a recent QB that developed under a starter, as part of a planned transfer of responsibilities, that he eventually supplanted. Play for today and draft starters. You just signed the guy this year, why spend more resources on eventually replacing h him? They shouldn't worry about QB for awhile now until it's clear that Jay is not their guy anymore.

If the Bears draft an offensive player in the first four rounds, I'll be happy. That defense still looks atrocious and the offense should be a top 3-5 unit as long as Bad Jay doesn't show up too often.

Kaepernick immediately comes to mind. I'm sure there are others besides them two.

I don't think the Bears view the WR position as a position of need. It isn't & they shouldn't. They should be good with who they have. The offense was fixed last year. Defense should be the priority, although I wont be surprised if they grab a QB in the middle or late rounds, maybe Jimmy G. if he falls a couple of rounds.

I'd dispute that because they drafted Kaep to play since Smith was not the guy they wanted to move forward with.
Cutler, unlike Smith, is the guy in the view of the Bears. So go with your guy and invest picks in players that help your guy win now. Developmental QB doesn't do that.

Emery doesn't need to target a receiver like the Panthers but I think he'll keep an open mind. Brandon Marshall is 30 in 5 days and a free agent next year and Jeffrey the year after that. Add this year suppposedly being a deep draft and you can perhaps get a 2nd or 3rd round talent in the 3rd or 4th. Thompson appeared to draft unnecessarily Cobb while having Nelson, Jones, Jennings and Finley. In two years injuries and free agency now has Cobb starting. The NFL is so fucked up with how quick things change. Cullen Jenkins leaves, Nick Collins messes up his neck, Bishop tears his hammy and the Packers plummet from top-3 defense to horsehit within a season.

Not to mention that Kaep didn't get a chance to play until Smith was hurt.

Start, you mean. He did get series occasionally before the switch was made. And he was drafted as an eventual replacement plan to the current starter, so he fits vegan's criteria.

Right, which is why I mentioned planned transfer earlier, which is what happened in GB. Of course teams have drafted QBs to eventually replace aging, high functioning stars, but it obviously hasn't always worked out like it did in GB. Arizona with Leinart may be an example.

What's the alternative? Pray for a free agent when Cutler is done? Draft one when they need one? The hit rate on drafting a starting QB in the nfl right now is very very low. Especially if they plan on being good and won't get a top pick.

The only reason the Bears might pick an offensive player in the first few rounds is if one of the top offensive prospects drops a couple of rounds & they end up taking the best player available. I would be happy if they drafted DE, DT, S, CB, LB, S, QB.

Yes. When he's done just start over. The risk of drafting a dud now will be the same by the time you move on from Cutler. Draft weapons your highest paid player can use now and for the rest of the time he'll be here.

He was drafted to replace smith, sooner rather than later, because they decided Smith was inadequate as a starter year in year out. What Bucky Chris and maybe you are saying is a team should draft a QB to eventually replace a 30 year old entrenched starter with zero performance concerns (if there were concerns he wouldn't have got paid). It's a premature plan at best. Draft a replacement when the writing is on the wall. Let me ask you this: would you want GB to invest a precious draft pick in a fourth or fifth round QB? Or would you rather they draft someone who can start today or next year at lets say...DE or TE.

I just don't agree with that logic. The risk is the same, except that you can keep drafting QBs until then until you find one you like. I'm in favor of drafting a QB late just about every season even when you don't need one.

The hit rate there for a better than average QB in the later rounds is about once a decade.

Tom Brady
Tony Romo

Those are the only late round quarterbacks worth anything in the league today.

This is one of the problems with the Cutler signing. It delays them finding the next guy for a few more years while Cutler gets surpassed by younger quarterbacks.

Basically, either this year or next year, they'll draft a guy late who will probably suck and then 3 years from now when Cutler is gone they'll draft a guy in the first round.

What's that, like 7 safeties you guys have now, not one who is a capable starter?

Just competition. Obviously not all of them are getting kept. Still hope they add one in the draft too.

So the cap now is about 7.5 million or so. So if you assume they need $5m or so for the draft, they still only have basically what Earl was making ($2.5). Wonder if they are now going to extend Marshall, or convert any of Cutler's money.

Gotta disagree with you on this.

The reason he got paid is because he's the closest thing to an NFL quarterback that this franchise has seen in forever. They couldn't sign a decent QB or draft and develop decent QB so they had to pay him huge money. Even though they hired a supposed QB transforming genius. Emery will just keep repeating that Jay is a franchise QB.

Agree to disagree. When the QB is in place, I'd rather go for depth everywhere else on the roster.

Gotta think that money was saved for Archuleta, considering Emery's offseason so far.

Even if I were to agree with you, I still find it wasteful to use picks on more QBs just after you invested big money in Cutler. The money means you pay him to play as starter for at least the next four years, which means you should use picks to surround him with talent during those years in order to maximize returns on the investment.
