All depends on the school and the situation.

In no way shape or form is Illinois being in the NIT a good thing.

Mad that your team didn't even get invited?

The answer is always the NCAA, even for a team like Colorado or American who got blown out.

That is why it is somewhat sad that things like the Rose Bowl seem destined to become the NIT of college football, though with a 4 team playoff it may be able to hang on with some level of relevance.

Are you too young to remember how excited Indiana and its fans were to win the NIT in 1979? A good performance in the NIT often sets the stage for a big season the following year.

I meant the NCAA is always better. My post must have been confusing.

Maybe eventually you will convince yourself this is a good year for Illinois.

I am glad to see you have lower expectations for a middle of the pack Big 10 team. Will help you survive the Groce years. 8)

The current bowl system is pretty much equal to the Maui Invitational. Becoming the NIT will be a step up.

I like the Illini to at least make it to face Southern Methodist.

And I disagree with BRick that getting blown out in a first round NCAA game is better than winning the NIT. It's only better to make the NCAA until you get killed. Once you lose like you're supposed to, it's obvious that putting together a run in tournament format helps your team going forward, especially if you have a bunch of young guys returning.

You're right.

Someone would rather go to the Poinsetta bowl and play a meaningless game vs having a shot at winning the national championship.

My bad.

What does that have to do with the Maui Invite or the NIT?

Being a #2 ranked team in the NIT means you just missed the field of 64. per Groce.

Well, if you were really trying to get the best 64 teams right now in the Tournament, I think Illinois has to be in. I told you last week that Ohio State and Iowa were going out first round. Maybe Illinois would have too, but I doubt they would have lost to Dayton or Tennessee right now. You never know though, obviously they had their hands full with BU the other night.

You don't think people enjoy going to the Rose Bowl?

Well, if you were really trying to get the best 64 teams right now in the Tournament, I think Illinois has to be in.

They need to get rid of the automatic bids then. It makes the regular season not matter as much as you say it does. A 13-19 team has no business in the NCAA Tournament.

They can keep the auto bids, but they need to give the automatic bids to the reg season champs.

I guess that's fine too. Teams don't really seem to give a shit about their conference tournaments anyway.

It benefits most conferences to have the best team "tank" in the conference tourney.

It doesn't really matter for the big conferences. The regular season champ is going to make it anyway. Besides that, I think it's up to the individual conferences to decide how they want to assign their automatic bid, isn't it? If one of these small conferences has a freak team win its tournament and that keeps out their really good regular season champ with only a couple losses, they have no one to blame but themselves.

For the record, I don't think Illinois deserved to be in the Tournament. The regular season has to count. I'm merely pointing out that they are a better team right now, today, than a bunch of teams that did get in, including several from their own conference.

Yes, it is up to the conferences on they give out their Automatic bid.
