Animal Collective is pretty bad as a group.
Somehow, they get worse when they branch out on their own.

They've had their moments, but Animal Collective as an indie phenomenon circa Meriwether Post Pavilion was absolutely baffling, particularly "My Girls" as this masterpiece anthem of New Sincerity. I get what they're going for, but it works better when it's heavily watered down: namely, Yeasayer and Passion Pit.

Back when Hipster Runoff was also a completely baffling indie phenomenon, this was actually a pretty good piece:

Animal Collective is a Band Created By/For/On the Internet

also I think Hipster Runoff is dead. Grantland claims another :(

i want to say i have an animal collective album somewhere...my friend was big into them. he was also big into bright eyes, of which every album i wished to douse in gasoline and watch as the fiery tendrils smack and pop each crevice until it is but dust in the wind...

"Summertime Clothes" and "Brother Sport" would be fine songs if they pared down a teensy little bit of the busy bullshit, but then they'd just be Passion Pit songs, wouldn't they? I don't think there's any hope for salvaging FOR MUH GURRRRRRRRRRLLLLZZZ, though.

Some good points in there.

Quote:
You can't maintain any self-evaluated, self-directed identity in the underground now, because the depth of immersion and filtration required to keep up overruns even the keenest observer. Not very long ago, you could poach or reject proposals put forward by theorists and critics at your own pace. You could check in once in a while, wear the shoes for a few weeks, and see if they fit. Today, you step off the conveyor belt to tie your laces, and whole genres will pass you by.

This is exactly how I felt about chillwave!

Bright Eyes is at least music, albeit horrible music. I can at least believe that alot of people
play his records at home and like it. But Animal Collective?  :puker:
Animal Collective is just an insufferable, mega-pretentious psuedo art project.
And this guy should be the president of the "Punch Me In The Face-Face" club:

you don't like them, that's fine

but the "project" has stretched over 10 albums, i.e. they aren't some flash in the pan/ flavor of the month

they are actual "musicians", i.e. Panda Bear is an incredible drummer

there was a set i heard about a year ago of songs from Centipede Hz they played acoustic, maybe it would help you to listen to the songs in a more stripped down manner so you can tell that they actually are "songs"

i mean they are a challenging band, yes. it's not Real Estate or something where the music just floats by like a summer breeze

You knockin' my enjoyment of the new Real Estate?

Challenging does not mean good. Some challenges aren't worth taking on. Igor Stravinsky is challenging. Ornette Coleman is challenging. The Residents are challenging. But they're worth it! If I'm going to dig through an aural landfill, I expect to come back out with something better than "decent pop songs." Then maybe write decent pop songs with only 60% of the chintzy synth burbling and clattering. So tired of hearing how this was "our" Pet Sounds. Ugh.

bagels doesn't like real estate now?

I've said this before (as B Rick can surely attest) - but animal collective reminds me of Ross' high school "band" in high school - which was just him playing weird noises on his cheap casio keyboard.

i like Real Estate ok, they're just bland
like background music, basically
something you listen to and perhaps enjoy, but makes no lasting impression

all the stuff about AC uses blips and beeps/plays on Casio keyboards/etc is just dumb

Yeah, I'm a fan of it as well. Generally find myself liking what Oberst comes up with. That Desaperacidos record was my jam at one point.
