i can picture the following being said during a marlins/cardinals game in the future:

"you know, many around the league like to say that giancarlo stanton is one of the premier young power hitters in the game. he had 34 home runs in his first full season in the major leagues, and had 37 in only 123 games when he was 22 years old. ..........matt adams is better"

"last year everyone was amazed when jose fernandez took MLB by storm en route to the NL rookie of the year award. they said he posted historic numbers for a 20 year old rookie who had previously never pitched at any level higher than A ball. ..............shelby miller is better"

see man, now that i stop and think about it, the offensive part was the dude's inflection on saying EVERYONE was talking about matt harvey's electric stuff last year.................but trevor rosenthal is better. it fosters this whole attitude of "everyone all across is a bunch of idiots, but us cardinals true believers, THE BEST FANS IN BASEBALL(TM), know better. our guy is better than that overhyped garbage these other teams trot out. i mean comeon tony cingrant only HOPES to have plan B while adam wainwright has plans Q, R, and S. because he's a cardinal and that's just the cardinal way; it's not our fault that we're better than everyone else..... ok well it is, but that's because we plans T, U, and V which are indeed brilliant plans that only a member of the st. louis cardinals could come up with.

so yeah i get what you're saying lipid, and hey hats off man you know nowadays "haterism" is a phenomenon and all that, and more power to ya if you've learned to shrug it all off and whatnot..... but i just gotta call it like i see it, and what i heard today in those two instances was some repugnant shit that really stuck in my craw. it's not enough to say that trevor rosenthal is good/great/whatever.... you have to go and say that EVERYONE, in their copious/vast stupidity/hubris, anointed (scoffs) matt harvey.... but our guy rosenthal is better! you see what they did there? they had to rub it in that all of baseball is wrong/inferior/etc and that's where i think some of the animus comes from. can't you just say that rosenthal is awesome/great/etc on his own merits? do you have to go out of your way to sideswipe not just matt harvey, but like, everyone because they're blind to the unequivocal truth that is the glory of the cardinal way? why the need to take shots?

while sore losers suck and all that, nobody likes a sore winner, you know?

I wasn't sure by the original post, but after that I'll go ahead and mark you down as not liking Cardinal fans...

The Rosenthal Harvey comparison is embarassing. And he said Rosenthal is better? Really?

I think maybe something got lost in context or something

Not sure why there is so much Cardinal hate, it's not like I live across the river from them. They have been a model organization for a long time, got nothing bad to say about the team and I appreciate the fans coming up to Chicago every year and paying my inflated ticket costs.

Rosenthal's fastball/change speed differential is one of, if not the widest-- on record. That's all I can really think of. I'm not saying Rosenthal (as a closer) is actually better than Harvey (as a starter) , but a good case can be made for him being nastier.

Its certainly not directed at the Cards fans here thats for sure but really? Probably the same reason for the Red Sox hate, a lot of their fans are insufferable knobs.

Red Sox fans were good people when they came here a couple years ago.

I don't know if there are 2 more hated fan bases than Cardinal and Red Sox nation around the country.

I think maybe something got lost in context or something

This is what I'm guessing...

...I was watching the game yesterday sporadically, but I was there for most of when Trevor was pitching...however I didn't hear the remark Sini is talking about, so I don't know if it was taken out of context or exactly as he says (not doubting him for a second...just stating I didn't hear it so I can't say how close to what he typed it was)...

...that being said, he said he heard this on the TV side, and those guys, Danny Mac (not that one) in particular, like to say things in the context of "Many people think x...but you might say y is even better" or something to that extent...I could easily see him saying something comparing Harvey to Rosenthal in this regard and it could be interpreted in the way Sini took it (but again, he could have just flat out said Rosenthal was better than Harvey, but that wouldn't be his usual style).

Right, but it's the quality and quantity. Cubs fans will exceed the Red Sox and Cardinals once it happens (but it'll never happen :| ).

I fully expect, should the Cub run off a few titles in a 5-7 year span, a good number of their fans would rocket well into douchebag territory. Success breeds contempt, and brings out the worst element in the meatballs...

Lance Lynn already with 3 runs given up...maybe he's done with pretending to be a good pitcher the first half of the season and is going to suck enough right from the start enough to motivate the Cards to get someone else in his spot.

In extremely small samples (20 AB), Piscotty has started the year continuing to blister the ball down in Memphis.

.350/ .435/ .450

Got home during the 7th inning, and Extra Innings didn't offer this game tonight. Those 13-14 channels overlap with the NHL package, which is still going, so only about half were allotted for baseball. Stl/Cin was not one of them. Hurry up and end, regular season hockey.

The game was on Fox Sports 1...I don't think you would have gotten it through the extra innings, no?

Would have normally. But when I looked at the preview channel, it only listed about 6-7 MLB games on the EI channels for last night. You get every game during the week and Sundays (except for those weird Texas games that go up against ESPN's SNB) and night Saturday games (since Fox owns the Sat. day games).

isn't carlos martinez supposed to start? or close? or something?

during that seminal reds/cardinals broadcast on monday (the one that "ingratiated" me let's say to cardinals announcing) i remember the top cheerleader PBP guy going on about how versatile carlos martinez is in that he can do long relief, high pressure innings, close the game, or even start if they need him to. basically if you need any form of a pitcher you look no further than carlos martinez because he is "that guy" du jour.

.....so naturally trevor rosenthal, who "is better" than matt harvey and his electric stuff (which sounds like a great bandname for a guy who makes electronic music by himself. eat your heart out atom and his package) is closing out games and lance lynn is given another chance to see if he's doctor jekyll or mr. hyde.

TL;DR = you figure if lance keeps shitting the bed for the redbirds they'll be able to take some young live arm and stretch 'em out to be the 5th starter du jour. i mean, wasn't carlos martinez way more heralded coming up than trevor rosenthal? even tho i wanna say that carlos was a closer in the minors, maybe it's not out of the realm of possibility that he could get stretched out into "this year's new kid" for the cardinals. it'd be a damn shame if it turned out that the cardinals' cheerleading announcers were merely blowing smoke up our skirts as opposed to heralding the final touches of the cardinals' 2010s NL empire.

Yeah, that was impressive...if the kid gets on base (and he did today) I'm not sure there's a player who has a bigger impact on the game (hyperbole be damned)

Sickel's top 20 Prospects:

1) Oscar Taveras, OF, Grade A: He’s going to be a monster as long as health issues don’t get in the way. Left-handed-hitting Vlad Guerrero is the ceiling here.

2) Carlos Martinez, RHP, Grade A-: One day over the service time limit, but I hate calculating that stuff. I use 50 innings for starters, 30 innings for relievers, so he still qualifies at 28 innings pre-season. For most teams he would be in the rotation. Assuming some slight additional command refinements and good health, he could become a number one starter or a superb closer.

3) Kolten Wong, 2B, Grade B+: Outstanding instincts, refined skills with solid second base tools. Perhaps something like Todd Walker with better defense is what I’m expecting here.

4) Stephen Piscotty, OF, Grade B+: Refined approach at the plate, only question is how much of his raw power becomes genuine home run production, which seems a typical issue with Stanford products. Personally I’m optimistic he can get to 20 homers someday with strong OBP contribution.

5) Alex Reyes, RHP, Grade B+: Aggressive grade for a rookie ball pitcher but I really like the upside here with mid-90s heat and a chance for two above-average secondary pitches to make a complete package.

6) Marco Gonzales, LHP, Grade B: Polished college lefty from Gonzaga shouldn’t need much time in the minors; I’d expect him to be a rotation candidate by 2016 if not earlier. Doesn’t have the ceiling of someone like Martinez or Reyes but his floor is high and the Cardinals have an eye for college arms.

7) Rob Kaminsky, LHP, Grade B-: Borderline B. Love the breaking ball. Fastball velocity varies but should develop into a three-pitch mid-rotation candidate. Higher grades likely once we see more innings out of him.

8) Tim Cooney, LHP, Grade B-: Third round 2012 pick from Wake Forest posted outstanding 125/18 K/BB ratio in Double-A last year. Throws three solid pitches for strikes, keeps hitters off-balance like a master, should fit as fourth or fifth starter on a big league team.

9) Randal Grichuk, OF, Grade B-: Acquired from the Angels in the Bourjos trade. This guy can be awful good if he makes just a bit more progress with the strike zone and I think the Cardinals are a good place for him to do that. Could be a real steal, and hey, he’s 4-for-9 so far in Triple-A with a home run.

10) Carson Kelly, C-3B, Grade B-: Grade C+: He didn’t perform too well in A-ball last year and we’ll have to see how the conversion to catching from third base works out, but I still find Kelly’s bat to be intriguing with a chance to hit for average, OBP, and power. I believe in the potential that made him a second round pick in ’12 enough to show some patience at this stage.

11) James Ramsey, OF, Grade C+: Florida State product draws raves for work ethic/makeup, most scouts seem to like him a lot despite mediocre physical tools. Hit .251/.356/.424 with 15 homers in Double-A last year, drew 53 walks but whiffed 108 times which was more than expected. For me he profiles as a solid fourth outfielder.

The top 11 guys seem obvious to me, but at this point it gets murky. The C+ types should be seen as a tier approach and not an in-cement ranking.

12) Aledmys Diaz, SS, Grade C+: Cuban defector working his way back into shape in Double-A after signing this spring. I don’t have any real idea what to expect so this is a WAG type rating until we see how the scouting reports translate into performance. Age 23, mixed reports about his defense, some say he can stay at shortstop, others disagree and project him as a 2B. Expected to hit for average with fringe-type power, will have to see about OBP. Could be anything from a regular to a utility player.

13) Zach Petrick, RHP, Grade C+: Undrafted pitcher out of University of Northwestern Ohio has turned into a genuine prospect, throws harder in pro ball than he did in college, good progress with curveball and changeup, throws strikes, posted 1.99 ERA with 122/27 K/BB in 113 innings last year. Began 2014 with five shutout innings in Double-A with eight strikeouts. Potential number four/five starter or a nice relief arm.

14) Cory Jones, RHP, Grade C+: Not a big name yet but Cardinals fans/sources are on him, posted 2.04 ERA with 52/16 K/BB in 66 innings last year in Low-A, big pitcher who throws hard and showed dramatically improved command last year.

15) Patrick Wisdom, 3B, Grade C+: Very impressive glove at third base, excellent when used at first base, but still trying to unlock his bat, hit .235/.313/.401 with 15 homers in A-ball. Supplemental ’12 first rounder from St. Mary’s has more offensive potential than he showed last year.

16) Lee Stoppelman, LHP, Grade C+ Borderline C. 24th round pick from Central Missouri in 2012 reached Triple-A in his first full season, 1.55 ERA with 78/26 K/BB and just 40 hits in 66 innings last year. Not just your ordinary LOOGY, throws three effective pitches. Started in college and in some organizations he would still be doing so.

17) Breyvic Valera, INF-OF, Grade C+: Borderline C. Sometimes you just like a guy. Best position is second base but he has experience everywhere except catcher and first base. Super-utility profile, contact hitter with .313 career average, still just 21 years old but already in the minors for five years. I think he’s pretty interesting.

18) Oscar Mercado, SS, Grade C: Borderline C+. 2013 second-rounder draws raves for defensive ability at shortstop. Did not hit well in rookie ball (.209/.290/.307) but is young enough to improve considerably and defensive skills will buy him time.

19) Vaughn Bryan, OF, Grade C: Borderline C+. 35th round pick last June, performed well in Appy League (.280/.341/.394, 13 steals). Very good tools, being hyped by some sources with understandable justification as he could develop into a 15/20 guy if all goes well. Everyone likes his athleticism but there are enough questions about offensive approach to hold me back a little until we get more data. Could rank much higher next year.

20) Edmundo Sosa, SS, Grade C: Intriguing player from Panama, hit .314/.396/.450 with good strike zone judgment in the Dominican Summer League. Decent chance to stick at shortstop, hitting approach very mature for his age. Could rank much higher six months from now.
