As the resident musical expert, Nirvana is both more important and better.

You should have seen the kids go crazy for Smells Like Teen Spirit at the Pink Palace on Corfu when that song first came out. People were in a trance like state doing things they wouldn't normally do. I, of course, remained cool.

Not true. I felt that way long before he pulled himself out. Samuel Johnson has a quote about the genuine and the counterfeit and the ability to tell the difference and prefer the genuine. Expressing genuine feelings through music is difficult. Finding a way to express emotion through one's playing can be elusive. The true greats do it all the time. Jimmy Page and J. Mascis never played a solo without real emotion. You know it when you hear it. It can be a small thing like that noise Iggy makes in "I Wanna Be Your Dog".

I knew I would never be a great musician because I couldn't put across real emotion. It was easier to go for a cheap joke. And much more comfortable for me. Those times when I did find real feeling in my playing were rare and they surprised me. It wasn't something I could summon at will. An example is our song "Flamingo". https://soundcloud.com/joe-orr-road-rod/flamingo When we come out of the bridge, we're strutting like Young-Holt Unlimited. Then at 2:13 Bill sings the line, "I don't listen to all the bad people". I must have played the song 100 times before I accidentally found those three perfect notes to play after that line. And I knew it. I could feel it. There are guys that do that naturally, without thinking about it. Those are the greats. And none of them are in Pearl Jam.

Take Dave Grohl's song, "Best Of You". It's clearly an emotional tune. Probably about some girl he knew. But he can't really put it across. His way to express emotion is to yell louder. Prince took that song and owned it, made you feel it in your balls, your heart. And he never even met the girl it was written about. That's greatness.

Yeah, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is just a better song than anything Pearl Jam has done. You might like some Pearl Jam songs better- hell, I love "Corduroy"- but "Teen Spirit" is perfection as a rock song. Big riff, strong hook, great lyrical content, perfect length, and hit at exactly the right time to have a huge impact.
"Alive" has all of these except the timing. Its also a better song with a 100 times better guitar solo.

Jeremy and Black are the two songs that match the passion of SLTS

From a strict songwriting perspective that may be correct, but I would disagree if we're talking about as performed by the respective bands. Nirvana had an emotional power that Pearl Jam is unable to match. Pearl Jam often feels like ersatz emotion. When you listen to that Unplugged recording, there's little doubt this is a man exorcising his demons through his music. You can feel his pain. When you hear "Jeremy" it feels like "Oh yeah, let me sing about this fucked up kid for three minutes before I go throw out the first pitch at a Cubs game".
Agree about the Unplugged record, but you are wrong about the bold text. Songs like Black, Immortality, Release, Indifference, might be more emotionally charged than anything Cobain ever did.

Even if I were to concede that Nirvana played with more angst and emotion, their songs just aren't as good as Pearl Jam's, and it's not particularly close.

Nirvana and Pearl Jam both suck. Let's talk about Iron Maiden instead.

i loathe pearl jam with every ounce of my being. they're the epitome of all that (i think) i stand against, but then again i was born in 1980 and there was a definite schism between being able to relate to kurt's lyrics on sophomoric shit like sliver (which was a weak nickname i had in high school since my first nirvana shirt was a sliver shirt) or floyd the barber.

i used to like their cover of the song dimension seven when i was younger (it was on that mythical $30 "hormoaning" japanese import single at tower records that nobody ever bought), until years later i heard the lyrics again and i'm like "whoa this song is all about going gay" and found it amusing that was the namesake of the bulletin board i ran with the friend who eventually ended our friendship when he went kinda gay for me in 2008 trying to hijack my life and all that. and well, when you get to the point where you realize that incesticide is a better album than either of their pop ones yeah i suppose it's just a product of the times like JORR spoke about.

for what it's worth tho, whatever he was i'm pretty sure kurt was legit/real. ben weasel verified this when he was able to meet the guy and wrote up the story for his panic button fanzine >> http://www.angelfire.com/punk2/cockfighter/page11.html

it's a pity that i think he was pretty much done with nirvana and prolly courtney too so she went and made a few phone calls and had him killed so that his back catalogue would become her cash. he prolly would have done some interesting shit later on cuz i don't think he was getting off of the heroin train anytime soon, and that seemed to negate a lot of the "music industry" stuff going on around him. it kept him connected to humanity, whereas i'm pretty sure eddie vedder is inhuman. JORR can you back me up on this?

Man, either you've got it or you don't. You can't fake it and you damn sure can't yell your way to it. Some of it may be due to Grohl being a member of the "ironic generation". It takes guts to put real emotion out there. To be sincere. That isn't a Gen-X strong suit. Grohl can make a smarmy Mentos video with the best of them though. Fantastic. I think Prince was pissed that Grohl took a song that he considered personal and serious and covered it with a wink. So he showed him how to play "Best of You" at the fucking Super Bowl. The most honest emotion I've ever heard from Grohl is in "Everlong". But I can see how Louise might be able to drag that out of a guy.

I just want you to listen to this song and tell me that anything Pearl Jam has ever done can match it for emotional depth. It makes something like "Alive" seem like a trifle. Sam Cooke was a beloved guy in soul and R&B circles. And Bobby Womack was nailing his wife. That made Womack a less than popular dude. And then Sam died his tragic death. But Womack wasn't just banging this girl. He was truly, desperately in love with her. And he wrote this song. But he wasn't really a singer and being pretty much persona non grata he was having trouble finding someone who would sing it. Then Wilson Pickett said, "Man, I'll sing your song for you." Two and a half minutes of a man pouring out his soul. And when Bobby cuts lose on the solo at 1:45 he does more in ten seconds than Joe Satriani has done in an entire career.

Eric Clapton and George Harrison made a lot of music about sharing the same broad.

Layla is a very emotional record. He obviously cared more about that broad than he did about his son dying, as clearly illustrated by the weakness of "Tears in Heaven".

This one guy that you've never heard of has sung with more emotion in a 10 second cut than Vedder has in his ENTIRE career. Vedder has never shown any emotion...how do I know this? I just do, I knew his 3rd cousin Jimmy the Skits, we used to run together in desperate circles. One night at a Carls Jr back in 89 we were doing some cock together and he wanted to kill his wifes cat, I was like "No" and he did it anyways! Then we had sex. After, he told me that his cousin "Eddy" who I didn't know of at the time, had any emotions. Later Eddy would become Eddy Vedder. Never met the guy, though, always brooding. Back then an onion cost a nickle, but my g/f had 10 nickels.

Yeah, I called you that in this instance.

Chill.

No worries. But if I weren't confident in what I was saying, I wouldn't say it.

If you've got a problem with me we can settle this like men.

Over a scotch and smoke?

That would be preferable.

Some people will never appreciate the lightning in a bottle that was Nevermind, and IMO, the better record, In Utero.
What I will never fucking comprehend is the unabashed worship a lot of people have for Yellow Ledbetter.
Now that's a hot pile of garbage.
Nirvana>Soundgarden>Pearl Jam, and I won't even dignify the existence of the wretched Alice in Chains in my overall opinion.
I obviously didn't hear the Narducy interview, but Verbow have 2 very solid records, and it sounds like a waste of his time to
play Grabass With Grimace.
