On Thursday morning, March 20th, at 2:06 a.m. EDT, main belt asteroid 163 Erigone will eclipse the bright star Regulus over the New York metropolitan area. Weather permitting, observers can see the star wink out of sight for as much as 14 seconds. This is the first time in recorded history that an asteroid blacks out a naked-eye star in view of such a heavily populated area. Get the full story from Sky and Telescope.

I wish I could see this. Get on it Brick. Take a damn video with your phone or something for me will ya?

For 14 seconds on Thursday morning, I would concur.

I initially thought this thread was going to be about Alex "The Jerk" Rodriguez in the most recent Detroit Tigers playoff series. Ha ha ha!

But then I thought that Alex "Punk Loser" Rodriguez is no longer a giant star, and his disappearance in that playoff series was quite a bit longer than fourteen (14) seconds. That does not mean that I did not enjoy a mighty chuckle anyway.

This is crazy talk. Football legend Lawrence Taylor may be a lot of things, including an alleged rapist, but I am certain that all of his alleged rape victims are 100% female.

Big deal. Star Scottie Pippen dissappeared for 1.8 seconds here over 2 decades ago.

I don't suppose anyone bothered to record this for ol' Darko.

So I changed the thread title.

There will be a total lunar eclipse on April 15th starting at 1 am central time.
It's worth checking out. The moon should turn a deep red during the Eclipse as light refracted thru the edges of the atmosphere bends into the shadow of the earth and onto the moon.
It's something worth showing the kids.

BTW along these same lines, the ISS has been visible the last few nights in a row.

We saw it a couple years ago when the shuttle was very near it also. They both moved across the sky at the same time. It was pretty cool.

Neil degrasse Tyson?

Cool guy, smart, GREAT life story. I enjoy his work on How The Universe Works. Not so big a fan of Cosmos yet as it's still kinda basic stuff but I would love to hear his lectures.

Sagan mentored him... I'd say it's worth YouTube. Just a cool story.

This is happening now. Skies cleared up nicely. About 35% eclipse at the moment

Closing in on 80%. More orange glow than red. This is due to low volcanic ash in the Earths atmosphere at this time. Had there been a recent major eruption we would be redder.

Thanks! Yeah but its worth it. Kinda. There's to be three more eclipses this year if I remember correctly. But this one is good, clear skies and cold temps for good seeing. Super clear stratosphere this time though, so we're thinking more orangy than reddy.
