That GIF has so few frames I think I could count them.

You try to buy the Nationals and they are 1-5 against the Braves so far this year.

9 home runs hit in the Pitt vs Cincy game and it's only the 6th inning. That ballpark is a fuckin joke.

What would your strategy be in a launching pad?

Go heavy on hitting or pitching?

Rockies go back and forth in their philosophy it seems.

Go after pitchers who have a lower flyball/groundball ratio...and pay them money appropriate to their skill level.

Wouldn't you have to pay them a little bit more though? If I'm a pitcher I'm not really trying to play for a team like the Rockies.

I guess if you couldn't draft and/or trade for them, sure....but I wouldn't go crazy with the checkbook just to lure some guy who otherwise doesn't want to be there.

Why does Lipid's suggestion not work? I mean...you need some pitching. Focus on sinkerballers and change-up pitchers.

Not sure if that was directed at me. I have no problem with Lipid's idea.

Maybe we can just answer this with the brilliant answer always given about how Wrigley plays "ya gotta get guys who are good in ANY weather"

Thanks

The hell? I gave you a serious answer.

If your ballpark has a reputation for giving up the long ball, I'd rather have a rotation of guys who keep the ball down, even if it meant they were slightly worse than another slate of guys who were prone to leaving balls up in the zone.

I'm sorry if that comes across as smarm to you.

pay them appropriate to skill level was the smarm part with relation to Bailey but I dont even mean malicious smarm. This is friendly smarm :D

I think you either have to go with your way or try and get high strikeout guys.

2007 Rockies were built on Offense and a great bullpen. Maybe thats a way to go.

Ok I feel you. 8)

I was going to say strikeout guys but a lot of times those are the same guys who like to expand the strike zone vertically...and if you don't expand enough, ruh roh.

I'm not a proponent of pitchers named after negative events. Bob Walk, your table is ready..

I vividly remember the first time I watched Bob Walk pitch...back when I think it was CBS doing a Saturday afternoon game, Bob had himself a balk...an 8 or 9 year old me thought it was pretty clever to start calling him Wob Balk.

anybody watching yordano ventura of the royals pitch this year? appointment television. he's this year's jose fernandez except that his breaking ball isn't "defector"-good like fernandez's. thus far he's mulched the rays and the astros so it isn't like he's ran the gauntlet yet, but you gotta like what you've seen thus far. he throws an easy 94-96 and can get it up to 98-101 if he needs to.

and this dude in nas' league won't trade him to me even tho i'm offering everything but the kitchen sink for him. grumble grumble. i guess someone doesn't wanna load up with cash so they can get springer and bradley in the coming weeks.

Billy Hamilton got hit by a pitch. Then he went first to third on a ball that didn't leave the infield grass. Then he scored on a groundball to the third baseman. Awesome.

While Colorado is not quite the offensive park it once was, it's still not very friendly for a pitcher. I always wondered why a different philosophy wasn't applied to the pitchers in that park. For example, more leeway for a guy who was being hit hard. My idea would be to get rubber-armed workhorse types guys who you didn't have to worry about pitch counts with so much. And tell these guys, "Look, we don't care about your ERA. You pitch in this ridiculous place, you're going to get hit hard. It's no reflection on you or your abilities. This is an advantage for us because we are in the proper mindset." And then when a guy gives up five runs in the third, just act as if it's only two, because your offense is likely to score as many or more. Let the opponent run deeper into its pen.

But I'm not sure if that could really work. I think being knocked around takes a mental toll on a pitcher. In that real launching pad period the Rockies signed a good number of decent pitchers and nobody really made a mark there. They got battered at home as you would expect and soon they were bad on the road as well. Mike Hampton and Darryl Kile come to mind. About the best guy they had in that time was Pedro Astacio.

Darryl Kile was especially bad in Chicago.

Colorado was collecting groundball/ sinker types a few years back... i'm not sure that it took, however, or the sinkerball types they were getting just stunk. Oakland does a similar thing with flyball pitchers, and it's hard to argue with their results. A ton of foul ground at O.co or whatever they are calling it now.
