Could have sworn there was a thread for this already, but I couldn't find it...alas, we find ourselves here.

I had the pleasure of visiting one of these on Sunday on the drive back from Minny, and while I was very happy with the burger (even if it was a bit more expensive than I would think it should be), I don't get the supposed love for their fries. After all, they seem to mention them so much on the various accolades hanging on the walls, that you would expect them do be the greatest thing ever.

I found them to be pretty average at best, and the only thing that was good about them was that they gave you a shit ton.

Thoughts?

Good burger. Way too expensive unless you put every topping available on it. Fries are actually cut from potatoes, which is good. Don't really understand the peanuts. The crazy Coke machines are fun at first, but then become a big fucking headache when all you want is something to drink and some fucking kid is there pushing buttons.

Plus Won. Went there with my wife over the summer and we spent just as much $ as we normally do for dinner at the local bar which has better burgers.

I like Smashburger and Red Robin (also unlimited fries) better.

Over priced and over-rated.
Surprised nobody else feels the way I do.

No, I feel the same way. I can't pay $8.50 for a mediocre burger, and no, don't bribe me into it with unlimited peanuts. I am not an elephant.

I like the cajun fries and it's a good burger. My order is a $1.50 cheaper when I get it at the 5 guys in Hammond near work than when I get it at the one in North Riverside by my home. For me, the Mr. Pibb Extra Cherry Vanilla is the best diet soda out there.

They are only $6.50-7.00 out here on the south side. That having been said, for a chain burger it's at the top of my list. The actual flavor of the burger & the amount of food you get actually fills me & my teenaged sons. Which is saying something given that the three of us easily took apart a five+ lb. rib roast & potatoes on Sunday.

For $26 between the three of us (3 burgers & a large cajun fries), it's in the semi regular rotation.

Smashburger on the other hand....I'll pass.

Yeah, the Smashburger near 75th and Lemont came a went in about 2 years. For what you get, I considered that more overpriced than 5 Guys, especially since there's a Steak and Shake right down the street that you can get similar food for 1/2 the price.

My favorite burger of all time is still a Frisco Melt from Steak n Shake. Grease, cheese, and glorified thousand island on sourdough bread... I think I just climaxed.

I used to love the shit of the Frisco Melt too, then one day I had one that had too much sauce on it and I haven't been able to gag one down since.

I hate when that happens to food I like.

I used to love Wendy's spicy chickens, and one day I got a big piece of gristle in one that I bit down on. It took me awhile not to vomit at the thought of it after that.

I've eaten at a Meatheads out in the Streets of Cultural Mecca after a movie. It's also expensive, but I felt like i was satiated and got what I paid for.

Agreed on Meatheads.

Steak and Shake is way underrated.

Tom and Eddie's is the best of these new fast food burger joints.

I consider Portillo's "baseline" beef. It's acceptable. Anything better is good.

I've never had a burger there.

What kind of society do we live in where a "good" burger is deemed expensive at ~$5?

I prefer Smashburger above all the other choices, but that, as well as Meatheads, Five Guys, etc...

All worth the price.

Can't bitch about the quality of a $2.50 Quarter Pounder or $2.50 Whopper if you're going to bitch about spending more for a better burger.

This is the correct answer.

And those onion strings are frigging magical.

I actually like the cajun fries at five guys. However, I think the best way to explain five guys is this:
my wife, who doesn't like hamburgers, loves five guys.

That should be their slogan. Five Guys: Hamburgers for people who don't like hamburgers.

My "good" burger from Five Guys, with bacon and cheese, cost more like 7.50...it was good, but not worth that...

...I have no problem paying a good amount if I feel like the burger is worth it...for instance, I've never left Red Robin thinking I got shortchanged.

I refuse the cheese upcharge and go with the sauteed onions and mushrooms. Good burger!

Not sure about other places but don't 5 guys and Red Robin even out when you consider drink price and tip at RR?
