Why is Rizzo in the Abreu Meter Thread. This is all about the magic that is a brew. I'm seeing a lot of great things above and beyond the power with him as a hitter in his first MLB season. Pitchers already made adjustments on him and he has already adjusted back.

How did the scouting reports on this guy undersell the power? It was pretty apparent from Day 1 that he had the ability to take it out of any park.

What scouting reports?

I heard nothing but raves. One guy famously called him the best hitter in the world

He was projected at like 28 HRs, right? That seems like it might be underselling his power

he's getting $11MM/year. Do guaranteed 30 homer guys make $11MM/year?

I saw .235-.265 hitter with some kind of loop in his swing that would be exploited, 20-25 HR power and a butcher at 1B.

All still very possible.

Very possible indicates it's likely. It looks very unlikely that he hits less than 25 HRs.

No. Very possible and very likely are too different things, by definition.

I didn't say very likely.

Your use of "very" in that context means you think there's a good chance it'll happen. Otherwise just say possible. And almost anything is possible, so I don't know what the point of saying that is. Abreu is going to finish with very good offensive numbers, IMO. He's likely going to be a liability at 1st, but he hasn't been as bad lately as he was the first couple weeks.

Was discussing this with a guy in my office who is counting on Abreu to improve.

Its possible obviously, but with most foreign players it seems they are what they are when they get here, good and bad.

I said very possible because it is more than just possible.

It is possible that I'll bang fifty different models today.

It is very possible Abreu could hit ~.250, 25 HR, and have too many errors at 1B.

So... you think it is likely that will happen. I don't. We'll see who is right.

Well played.

But it is kind of hard to make it seem as if I was implying something other than what the standard definition of the words I used mean.

Many home run hitters are streaky. Abreu could hit 7 in April and 1 in May. That would be 24 HR on the season if averaged out.

I would say it is extremely likely his BA falls in between the projected .235-.265 or whatever, and that he is a butcher at 1B.

If I were to bet on his home run total, I'd bet near 30 or just above.

And whoever projected this:

I saw .235-.265 hitter with some kind of loop in his swing that would be exploited, 20-25 HR power and a butcher at 1B.

would have been very close and should be deemed an excellent scout.

FF is trying really hard this season to play the role of a hardcore baseball / White Sox fan. It is fun.

I'm not trying to play any role. This Sox team is much more interesting than anyone I've seen the past 5-6 years.

I think Abreu will finish around .260-.270ish for BA, but his OPS, OPS+ is gonna be very good. His contract will be a bargain. Like I already said in the Sox/Tigers thread, I think he will DH when Dunn finally goes. I don't expect a ton of improvement at 1B.

Yeah, if he becomes a career DH his 1B prowess won't matter at all, naturally.

The contract looks good for now. If he holds up.

Even as a .250 / 30 HR guy $11M is acceptable.

If he hits like Cespedes, the contract will be worth it. Most "seasoned scout" types believe that he is much better than Cespedes. I believe you once championed Brett Jackson as not only a "future Mike Trout" but also believed he was an average MLB hitter. Your talent evaluation skills need some fine tuning, regardless of how "hot" your hatchback rides.

I do remember someone here giving the Wells promisedland thing.

I didnt have him circled in as CY, but the guy was 26, threw a 3'05 ERA for a full season as a 5th starter, just maintain that and you found a 5th starter, great find.

Then he became Rich Hill!
