According to bigfan, he said "player."

But...well...that requires trusting bigfan.

Bernstein: Abreu Story Obscuring Truth
May 7, 2014 10:30 AM

By Dan Bernstein-
CBSChicago.com Senior Columnist
(CBS) It has been quite a season so far for the young Chicago first baseman, and he’s well deserving of all the attention.
He has already compiled a full 1.1 Wins Above Replacement, and his .397 mark in the illuminating category of wOBA (weighted on-base average) is 17th in all of baseball — identical to that of Angels great Mike Trout. Even more impressive is his .415 on-base percentage, good for seventh in MLB. His offense alone has accounted for 24 runs for his team, per wRC (weighted runs created).
So yes, give it up for the Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo.

Then the number isn't 100.

The whole thing is designed to give a clear answer. So 96 is fine. What about 88? What about 82? What about 65?

96 works for me.

This is so stupid. It was a dumb comment by Stone that is pretty much impossible to quantify

I'm saying it will be interesting to look at by the end of the year. That is it.

We've set the bar now. It's 100. I think that is high but now we can wait and see who is "far superior" to Rizzo and Abreu at the end of the year. It will be interesting to see what conclusions it draws.

50+: marginally superior
100+: far superior

I usually dont jump in on the "Stone just hates the Cubs" stuff but to write off a 23 year old player against one who has never played in MLB is a little curious.

Negligible difference: .001 - .010 OPS
Marginal difference: .011 - .050 OPS
Noticeable difference: .051 - .09599999999 OPS
Vast difference: .0960 - .150 OPS
'Let's not even compare these two' difference (aka the Jackson-Trout difference): .151 and up OPS

I didnt say he's wrong.

Its impossible to quantify a two word statement by numbers.

Maybe it will be obvious. Either way, Id prefer a little more specificity out of my baseball analysts.

If Stone said the Sox would be far superior to what they were last year what would he mean? 10 games better? 15? 20?

Thanks for making this even more confusing by not using the term "far" or "superior".

Far difference isn't proper English. And these work both ways....so you could say 'superior' or 'inferior' depending on what kind of personality you have.

So...to clarify... Player A would need to have an OPS that is between .096 and .150 higher than Player B to be considered far superior.

Anyone can play 1st, an outstanding first baseman vs an average first baseman that hits better is an easy pick...the Better hitter , this will come down to the bats...if Abreu can hit 35-120 ....he will run away with this debate .

Just want to get this straight..

If Abreu Bats .230/35/120 and Rizzo bats .296/28/96 this year alone, Abreu is now the far superior player. Just checking

It's obvious, even if they both hit 35-120 Abreu will run a way with it.

I could see Rizzo having Mark Teixera's career.... problem is, I'm not sure which Mark Teixera career he's going to have.

I think Stone was banking on Jose being a consistent 35-40 -120 plus guy for a decade...Rizzo just won't achieve that...but going by your numbers there...Abreu would be around 22% better at the plate.

No.

I still don't think it would be that simple. You'd have to consider how many opportunities each player had regarding RBI.

And simply put...HR is just one way to score runs. I don't know why we are factoring HR in if we are already looking at RBI.

 Get the hell outta here with that nonsense. Go watch Abreu's at bats from last night's game. He looked nothing like "a masher with good pop." This is not the first (or second or even third) time this season he has had games and at bats like that.

Clearly Abreu has been better than Rizzo thus far.

You Cub fans must be delusional! Every time I check the score it's Badguys 5 Cubs 1 or Badguys 4 Cubs 2.

RIZZO ain't driving home the "big" ribbies!!!

Don Zimmer & Jim Fry would have dumped his ass just like Raffy Palmeiro.

Also, Bring up Chris Valaika from Iowa !!!!

But he gets on base! Nobody is on base in front of him! Abreu and 75 others have had more chances for RBI! RBI is a bad stat! He has a high OPS! He gets on base! He is becoming a refined hitter!

All I'm saying is before "flipping" another solid starter for the never ending "future prospects",someone needs to fall out of love with a "Rizzo". The Cubs can always find a guy to rank 76th in MLB to drive home runs. It doesn't seem like they would have to search too hard for that.

Is Abreu a better hitter than Votto?

Votto has only 10 RBI.

By necessity, Rizzo is the Cubs' three hitter.

Eventually, he probably won't be.
