Not another one. Not this one. Not Jose Fernandez, the best young pitcher in Major League Baseball.

Results of an MRI performed Monday on Fernandez in Los Angeles aren't yet known, but the early signs are discouraging: The Miami Marlins say Fernandez has a sprained right elbow. A sprain of any kind is a tear, and a torn ulnar collateral ligament usually means Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. If he goes under the knife, Fernandez would be at least the 34th player in the majors and minors to have Tommy John since Feb. 18. That, notes Yahoo Sports columnist Jeff Passan, is 2.5 every day.

Fernandez told the Marlins he was feeling discomfort Friday during his most recent start against the Padres. His velocity showed a noticeable drop as that game continued, going from 96.2 mph in the fourth inning to 90.0 in the fifth and 91.2 the sixth. He also threw up in the dugout, reportedly, before the game.

It's a terrible injury for any player, but the loss of Fernandez would be a huge blow to the improving Marlins, who came in 20-18 and in second place in the NL East after losing an average of 94 games the past three seasons. Losing Fernandez also continues an alarming trend that's becoming all too common in the majors: unhealthy elbow. Still, an injury to the elbow can be repaired more easily than one to the shoulder, history has shown.

In addition to the players currently recovering from Tommy John, Fernandez would join Matt Harvey of the Mets and Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals as elite young arms of the moment who have had the surgery early in their careers since 2010.

Fernandez doesn't turn 22 until July 31, but he's already demonstrated that he's at least as good as any pitcher throwing currently. Fernandez leads the National League in strikeouts and has posted 2.44 ERA in eight starts so far. Through his first 36 starts in the majors, Fernandez is 16-8 with a 2.44 ERA and 257 strikeouts in 224 1/3 innings. As a rookie, he led the NL in fewest hits allowed per nine innings.

Other than Clayton Kershaw, it's hard to say there's another pitcher in the majors a team would rather start with than Fernandez.

His next move is to see the Marlins team doctors, who will examine Fernandez and his MRI readings.

last year he usually didn't even throw 100 pitches, topping out once at 109. last week he threw 7 innings and a career high 114 pitches.

Right, he's as good as Werth right now. He's still only 21 and he put up an 854 OPS last year.

I think he'll eventually harness it all and have a few ridiculous seasons

We constantly hear about the concussion prevention and things like that in youth football, when is MLB going to step up and do something about kids throwing breaking balls at 10, 11, and 12 years old? That is likely what is causing this.

I don't think anyone is sure why guys get hurt. One thing I'll say about the 40s and 50s is a lot more guys played. And no one was counting pitches. Organizations had many minor league teams. I would guess it sorted out the guys that got hurt. It may have been a war of attrition to some degree. The guys who made it to the big leagues were probably the guys who could take the work. A guy like Bob Feller may have been a freak, but I would guess he threw a shitload of innings as a kid growing up and he never got hurt.

I've heard the argument that guys throw nastier pitches nowadays. Absolutely untrue. Nobody really throws shit like a screwball anymore. See if you can find a picture of Carl Hubbell's arm online.

The lunatic Mike Marshall had a school where he taught a weird delivery that he claimed wouldn't get guys hurt. I don't think any of his students made the majors though.

True, but there are all kinds of limits on innings. I would suspect that in 1960 if you had a stud pitcher, he might go six innings three or four days in a row. I don't think that's happening now. And these dads with big league dreams aren't likely to allow it even if the league rules did or a kid was in multiple leagues.

Those parents are fucking idiots. Tommy John is a nasty painful surgery and those dopes want to put their Kids thru it because they think replacing a ligament in their elbow will make them throw a baseball harder. It's absolutely disgusting.
