Just got done grilling some meat from Allen Brothers. Actually the first products I have ever ordered from them, based solely on listening to the show. Couldnt have been more delicious.

I also ordered some buffalo ground beef and skirt steaks, look forward to trying them as well

Doesn't Allen Brothers freeze their meat in order to ship it? If so, I would suggest spending your money at a place like Fox & Obel or a high-quality butcher shop. Freezing meat causes ice crystals to form inside it; ice crystals destroy the cellular structure of meat; collapsed cellular structure, in turn, leads to poor texture. That's why none of these high-priced mail order meat places are worth the money.

I think this was covered somewhere else but where in the city can I pick up chunks of wood for my kettle. I know Backyard BBQ in Wilmette but was looking for something in the city so I can stop on the way home from work.

I was fortunate enough to win AB from Jurko vs Harry a couple times and I was very pleased with the meat (especially the filets). In fact, I still have some in the freezer to grill. But when I first opened that catalog my eyes almost shot out when I saw the prices.

Fatha and Motha get all of their meat from Allen Brothers. Neither one would be caught dead listening to sports talk, so they "discovered" it on their own. I always enjoy an invitation to dinner. Since they don't eat leftovers I try to overestimate my hunger to take some home. Even better is on a Sunday when I can double mooch a breakfast AND a dinner. Nothing brings me back to my youth like getting to the house at about 11 a.m., eating a huge breakfast, watching the Bears and then wondering what's for dinner at about 3:30.

I'm not saying that mail-order meat is horrible, just that it's generally not as good as the fresh stuff you can get at a really good butcher shop or an upscale grocery store like Fox & Obel. And the mail-order stuff is also usually way more expensive than stuff you can find locally, so you're paying a lot more for meat that at best is the same, but more likely worse, than what you'll find around you by being a smart shopper.
