Bingo. This is douchebaggery, pure and simple. I usually start my conversations with "how are you doing?" After you've been sitting on hold for 15, 30, 45 minutes, it's just a natural response to go "hey, how are you doing." To act like it's a chore, and to hear the chorus of defenders behind him, is just another example of how Mac will always get a slide as long as he posts on this site.

Or ask yourself this question: how would you react if Lawrence Holmes did the same thing?

Point taken. I still don't see the difference between a caller asking someone how they are doing and 50 people calling in to say the quarterback sucks.

The latter would be the driver's fault, whereas the former is something the driver is incapable of stopping, but to plea to the people to stop. Why people refuse that common courtesy is beyond me.

Quote:
Listening to the radio you are surely going to hear the same questions asked. The fact that Mac get irritated by his customers asking how he is doing is just stupid.

I suppose, to the extent it's like fighting the tide. Einstein said "two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not so sure about the universe."

Yeah, but they always have that pregnant pause. "Hey, guys, how's it going?" *pregnant pause* *Guys and caller both reply at the same time* *pause* "First time caller." Ugh! Get a vasectomy, now.

I don't mind hearing it and I think it is a natural transition for the caller. The only time I notice it is when the hosts bring it up and I think it's rude. It seems to bug them way more than it does anybody else and I think there are better things to get worked up over. Whatever.

When I used to call in, the screener would always mention, "Don't ask them how they're doing," before putting me on hold.

Not sure if they still do that or not. If so, then the callers should get the idea.

See, you're thinking what happens a lot of the time. They ask how it's going, and start right in, no problem. Or they ask how it's going, the host immiediately replies "fine," and they start right in. But all too often, they ask how it's going, the host assumes they'll start right in, but instead they wait for the "fine, how are you." Or, the opposite: they ask how its going, the host starts to reply "fine, how are you," only to be cut off by the caller starting right in. This happens virtually every show, and could easily be avoided if people would simply not ask how things are going.

I've always aspired to be cool enough to eventually be able to answer the phone with two simple letters. GO. Maybe they should try that.

It's just habit for people to say "how you doing" and especially when you're on hold forever it's an easy way to get a response out of the host to ensure you're on the air without playing the hello game for 45 seconds and asking "am i on the air" while at the same time making the show look like a 3rd rate college show.

It's conversational and if the hosts get over their dislike for it and accept that it's NOT going to change, the listeners won't notice it either. This is your job, make it work and make it flow naturally. And with all the time spent on the show discussing Harry's hard on for pretty much everything except Mark Prior, listening to 1.2 seconds of someone saying How You Doing isn't really that big of a deal now is it?

Now we know the genesis of the "hello game" and other B&B carts.

If you could teach everyone to just begin their call with "Hey guys, __question__", maybe you'll fit in 2? more calls an hour.

As much as I don't like the "how you doin" small talk, especially after the host goes out of his way and starts a segment of calls with a preemptive "before any of you ask, we're all doing fine"; Joe dumbass on the stevenson who has his radio on while his call gets answered is infinitelly more annoying.

Actually, I would say that continually asking a question that has already been asked and answered many times is a sign of poor listening, and thus a sign of bad manners as well.

The flaw (one of) with your theory is that evey caller is a different person and therefore are asking the question only once. As far as poor listening...hey, not everyone listens all day. Besides, Mac is so moody, he could be saying "good Jim" one minute and calling someone a bitch the next....seems like a legitimate question for each caller

How is my point "flawed"? The fact that callers are distinct is irrelevant. If the callers are listening to the show, they know the answer. If they haven't been listening to the show, why are they calling in the first place? Further, one doesn't need to listen all day to ascertain how Mac is doing. The thirty minutes or more callers typically wait on hold before hitting the air should sufficiently clarify Mac's current state of wellness for anyone. Your defense of meaningless social formalities is silly.

Tony Kornheiser never had a problem controlling this phenomenon. Anyone who asked got cut off. Kornheiser made a shtick out of it, and it was pretty funny.

Maybe so, but the way he blew up callers was funny.

MJH wouldn't need to do that, though, if they would just have their producers firmly instruct callers to get to their points without adhering to any social niceties.

That's what's wrong with ESPN.They seem the need to fill the air with rag reporters with douchebags like Lupica , Skip Bayless, Kornheiser, Stephen A. Smith , Wilbon and what ever other swinging dick took a journalism class at Queens college.

MHF has become a debate in the booth with 3 guys who don't have a fricken thing to say and the Sunday night games have become the games to watch.MNF has become a side bar to Sunday games period.

Kornhiser bringS nothing to the table and when they brought Barkley in the booth last night I became a lot smarter about the NFL after listening to that bag of wind. These networks have to learn it's not about the guys in the booth but it's about the game on the field.I think NBC and Fox get's it but ESPN AND IT'S LEGION OF DOUCHEBAGS HAVE YET TO LEARN THAT.
