If there's not a completely gratuitous and lengthy Jason anecdote today I will be rather disappointed ...

oh yeah i'm with DT on this one. i was thinking that bernstein obviously does the job to get the charity $$$, but there's no way in hell that he acknowledges it.... and then the kid will be brought up in tranny in under 5mins the next day.... if it's under ~2mins of tranny you know he's REALLY saying "FUCK YOU" with a side of his radio buddy david kaplan's "...but thanks for listening" (aka "....my wife likes it")

appointment radio today @ 1pm.... for once.

Did anybody call in to try to bait Bernstein into it yesterday? Call and say "man, I think youth hockey is the easiest sport for a parent..." type stuff?

I get irrationally angry anytime someone reads something longer than a short paragraph word for word on the radio, what a waste of time.

It seemed to be "Hockey thinks it is unique and special and it's the only sport who thinks that. Here is a list of what makes every other sport unique and special".

"Hockey doesn't cross political lines enough" is always a fascinating criticism to me.

Where is hockey most popular? I would say, in descending order, Canada, Minnesota, the Northeast, and the rest of the upper Midwest. Okay, now where do people most often elect governments that range from liberal to literally socialist? Uh oh. Crunching the numbers, if hockey doesn't cross political lines enough, then it doesn't include enough Republicans/conservatives, but because this is a criticism vis-a-vis the NBA, I know that's not what you mean. So are hockey fans just everyone who lives there but doesn't vote for the correct political party?

Do we complain that college football doesn't transcend politics enough with its power base virtually conterminous with the part of our country that seceded over the right to hold slaves? Oh, we don't? Thought I'd ask.

Hockey unique and special? I don't know anyone that thinks that. It is an exciting fast paced sport and no higher than #2 on most Americans' list of favorite sports. In fact, it is #3 or much lower in most cases.

I love hockey, and it's #3 for me after baseball and football.

Sports are an escape from daily life, and therefore are naturally disconnected from work and politics. To try to put sports into a political bucket is just wrong.

Well, by definition, hockey is unique, unless there are other sports you know of which require substitutions on the fly, being made to play at uneven strength, and to do it all on ice skates. Everything is special to the people who like it. I think what's more peculiar than needing to assert how cool an interest of yours is is needing to assert to those people how cool it isn't.

I expect John Czahor to take whatever Bernstein is saying about this and try to shoehorn it in (to The Maxwell Show on The Loop) at some point in the not-too-distant future. Of the gaggle of Bernstein clones, he's probably the most blatant.

Rec league soccer meets two of those things.

Is it splitting curious hairs to think that it might be low-level hypocritical for B&B to (rightfully) denounce the name Redskins but then to have no problem saying the word instead of something more passive agressive yet also faux sensitive, such as "the Washington football team"?

Don't get me wrong ... I'm not looking to really roast them for it as I don't believe it is hypocritical ... or, better said, I don't believe it enough to even feign wanting to light them up for it ... not remotely enough.

I just think it dovetails from the Chris Rock bit wherein you might as well have a team called the New York N_ggers ... I mean, you wouldn't say "well, here's a fun story regarding the reprehensible N_ggers' team name ...".

edit: sorry ... spelled the naughty word properly

"Hockey fans are genetically related to St. Louis Cardinals fans who think they have some sort of superiority."

"I like your angle."

"And there are people who think Mike Emrick is a bad announcer."

Yeah, well, he is.

Earlier during my travels home Dan mentioned some thing big and hurtful is coming for the Pacers in the next game at Miami. Terry added no way Lebron gets 5 fouls by the third quarter at home. I don't doubt that likely will happen but I got to wondering why and why Dan and Terry believe that?

In sports clearly there is a home field advantage. I do not know exactly why that is especially in the NBA. You can get home calls and home crowd noise perhaps home cooking and better sleep but I doubt that is so bis in a back and forth series.

Dan is big on talent wins out and he is Mr. Measurable Metric if nothing else so why does he lend credence to the home town edge when it is no more measurable or certain than momentum or any other thing he shoots down?

Been a while since we did the "I'm a hockey fan and hockey fans are so bad, love me, Dan and Terry" segment. Maybe like a week.

Go read Pro Football Talk during the lockout and behold legions and legions of idiots complaining that those dumb shines don't deserve a cent and should get back to work (despite being...locked out).
