Agree. I think Pettitte gets love because of his playoff performances. No way in hell on Hudson and Mussina. Never the most dominant at their positions over any stretch , compilers . HOVG for both no doubt.

Playoff stats are so meaningless in this generation due to all the extra games played and teams making it in. I don't need to hear about Pettite's 19 post-season wins when half of them probably came in an ALDS series.

Pettitte was a pretty good pitcher. Another guy I would say was better than Don Sutton. But he's not in my Hall of Fame either. He's with guys like Cone, Key, Mussina. They were really, really good, but I'd put a guy like Dwight Gooden in ahead of them. They had better careers, but nobody ever came out of the box like Gooden did (except maybe Feller) and he had an all-time season when he was 20 years old.

I recall a helluva lot of very average years for the great (postseason ) Pettitte. Btw, I don't recall him being more than a #3 pitcher on the Yankee champeenship teams. No #3 starter belongs, except maybe Smoltz.

Ill go out on a limb and say Pettite was more than the third starter in the years his team went to the WS and he finished top 5 in Cy Young voting. That happened 3 times.

Wow! I never said Pettitte was average. I think he belongs in the Hall of Very Good, as a compiler & solid contributor on a dynastic team. He doesn't belong to be in the same conversation with Feller, or Gibson or even Pedro. He wasn't a "special" pitcher in the sense that he instilled fear or awe. Conversely, he wasn't a consistent "technician" like Maddux, or Tommy John or even Kaat. It's not a knock on him to say he had a great career, but he isn't HOF worthy.

As for Fred Lynn vs. Bernie Williams, your first misconception is that Fred Lynn was average. And possibly that Bernie Williams at his best was as good as Fred Lynn, Dave Parker, or Kirk Gibson at theirs. Bernie Williams was about in the same category as Ken Griffey, Sr., very good, great moments and solid, long time major league contributors. Again, not a knock. With the exception, I wouldn't have paid to watch any of them play either (except for the Cobra).

But that's kind of my HOF line in the sand. Would I pay to watch them play. Pettitte and Bernie, no.

Although their career totals are pretty similar, Lynn spent virtually his entire career with people wondering why in hell wasn't he as good as he should be. Williams played his entire career under a halo of Yankee greatness and multiple World Series titles.
