It's a start.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/br ... 1982.story

EA Sports reached a $40 million settlement with college football and basketball players in the case involving the use of the likeness of athletes, ESPN.com reported Saturday.

The settlement was reached in an Oakland, Calif., federal court Friday night.

It leaves the NCAA alone to defend itself in the upcoming antitrust trial led by former UCLA basketball player Ed O'Bannon. That case is scheduled to begin June 9.

After attorney fees, as many as 100,000 current and former NCAA athletes could receive up to $4,000 each. The settlement applies to athletes whose likeness appeared in EA Sports college basketball and college football video games since 2003.

Yes. It is.

However, they will now have to look at paying going forward. And they aren't done collecting from the NCAA yet.

Says in the story that the game is on hiatus. If they can't get likeness rights for free, they'll go find a venue where they can. North Texas High Schools, coming up (North Plano versus Arlington)

What did Ed Obanon get from this? he started this suit?

LAWERS?

In a class action, does the first guy who filed the suit get anything more? he did all the work

An unmemorable NBA career.

Not sure, but I hope so. And you are dead on about the NCAA football being better.

I'm pretty sure he gets substantially more.

For me the EA NCAA game has always been better, and weirdly, it's about that tripe that they trot out for real college sports. "It's about the name on the front of the jersey not the back!" You can play multiple seasons of NCAA and never have a drop off because of not knowing the players, because that's the nature of it. Play a few seasons of Madden and as the players you know start dropping out the less you enjoy it. The shorter season helps too. 4 exhibition, 16 regular season, and 3 playoff games vs 12 games, maybe a conference championship game, and a bowl. It adds up.
