It's utterly amazing how quickly we forget how this whole engagement started.

It's amazing that FavreFan is the one taking the moral high ground here.

You think that people here are actually for killing innocent civilians in other countries?

Or do you think that we attacked first and started this?

This didn't start with 9/11.

And DB, I'm not really taking any moral high ground here besides pointing out just how immoral our drone policy is. That's fine if you guys disagree.

President Obama was against killing these women and children back in 2007-2008.

He was for a lot of admirable things while campaigning in '08. I wish that guy was President.

Where were we drone striking innocents in that region before 9/11?

We didn't have drones back then. We used other methods to maintain our foothold in that region.

We had a foothold in Afghanistan pre 9/11?

Of course, but I said region, not that country specifically. We've had a presence in that entire region for decades. Whether you think what we did during that time was justified or not isn't the point. They didn't just single us out to attack based on throwing darts at a map. There was a reason for it. And the "they hate us for our freedom" line of thought is ridiculous. There are countries that are more free that spend a fraction of what we do on defense/intelligence who haven't been attacked. Bin Laden, Al Queda, and other terrorists are clearly evil, but there's a reason they picked us as their target of hatred. I'm not equating our actions with theirs, but we aren't innocent here. And if you think of a small boy growing up in Pakistan who has family members who have died in bombings and drone strikes and he doesn't have access to Americans or the American point of view on things, it's not difficult to understand how he would make the connection that the United States is evil. We have to change that with our actions, not our rhetoric. Many of them don't have access to our rhetoric.

I'm unaware of us having a lot of allies in that part of the world.

Iran on one side and Pakistan on the other. Bush had to pay them off to go along with his foray into Afghanistan.

So then when did it start?

Also, what countries that have more freedom than us that have not been attacked?

The reason is Israel, and it isn't a problem we started or cause.

So just to be clear, you are saying we in some way deserved what happened on 9/11? We don't get most of the blame, but some of it?

You bring up fair points, but explaining a reason why something happens doesn't excuse the behavior. I can explain why Jeffrey Dahmer did what he did. It doesn't mean he is justified.

Also, most of those other countries with more freedom have been attacked, leach off our protection or define freedom much differently than us.

No, of course I'm not saying we deserved 9/11. Those civilians did nothing to deserve to die that day. I'm not excusing or justifying the actions of terrorists. Just recognizing that we played a role in becoming the object of their ire and thinking we are going about rectifying that in the worst possible way.

Bullshit.

Oops!...Obummer did it again. This lazy criminal has traded our security so he can free his terrorist starting 5. He wants them to destroy America and Israel next year. He hates our way of life. That is the only logical explanation for this regime making the Phil Espisito and Gretzky trades look fair value in comparison to this. #Truth

She heard that from a video.

His son will be hospitalized for the foreseeable future.

Must have been that home cooking that the Taliban provided.

The Taliban PR agency has done a very good job of changing the reputation of the group. The Republican Party should contract the same firm in order to return back to being more popular than the Taliban.

So five Taliban members for an Army deserter? This looks like a disaster. Hopefully there is more to it.

I have been withholding my opinion but it looks like the WH announcement/op with Daddy was maybe jumping the gun as this kid has some stink around him.

I'd guess they thought the Taliban was turning him and he was going to become some sort of PR disaster. I suppose they could have droned him if that's the case, but that risks an even bigger PR disaster. By the same token, who knows how fucked up we left the 5 guys we gave back. Could have MKUltra'd them to hell and back.
