I heard a while back, that WSCR was going to can Mike when his contract expired. But it seems like that would have already happened if it was going to. I used to listen to Mike for years. I liked him with Jiggets and still listened when he was with Doug Buffoon. But a while after he went on his own-he became unlistenable for me. Too much politics and entertainment talk. He should have stuck with things he has a better handle on-sports. Too bad someone couldnt explain to him that he's never going to be a Howard Stern type radio guy. Mike can be outrageous and sometimes it makes for good radio that he has that bent, but somewhere along the line, he got lost. Just wondering if anyone knows if the Score is still planning on dumping him and his huge salary?

The salary will probably decrease but I think he will still be with the station. There was talk about a buyout early in the year and Mike hired Ed Vrdolyak to represent him. New and favorable management came to CBS and ratings have gotten better so those discussions appear to have died down.

Yeah and Vrdolyak was indicted on fraud and bribery charges so he's probably working on his own case, not Mike's at this point. Mike's salary will be back down in the mid six figures which is still six figures too much. The guy is just hard to listen to. I try, I swear I try, but I just can't do it. So rather than bitch and moan I exercise my God-given right and turn the dial.

I agree - he'll take a cut but will still be on, most likely in the morning still.

While you are all talking in terms of common sense, think about the topic?

Mitch is going to play a huge role in this negotiation as the ego will need to be soothed.

I am guessing there will be a number of "broadcasts from Papiland" when all is said and done as some type of consideration for the cut in pay and more vacation. Of course this is all assuming he takes the cut.

I coule easily see him try and go elsewhere, take low 6 figures with incentive deal if they give him his own show and own power again. WCKG, North Middays! Leaving the door open for the ROCK n WEBHEAD show!

It would be wrong for North and the Score, but it could so easily happen.

I've always asked this question. Who is the Score negotiating against? Who the hell wants Pappy? Nobody. WCKG is the same company as the Score Big Fan.

a. The Score shouldn't want him back.

b. They can get him for their price and their conditions if they want.

mikey two times will probably take a pay cut and stay at the score. hopefully his ego won't let him take the cut and he will be off the air, but i think he might know that he has no leverage.

You are aware that the world at large does not acknowledge the existence of WCKG? Check the ratings book that just came out. They are probably paying about minimum wage to anyone whose name is not Dahl.

I could see someone like WLS taking a flyer on him. I still think a North and Vrdolyak show could be interesting should things go well for fast eddie.

I don't think North could do a political/social talk show. He doesn know enough about the topics. Yeah, he could do the 'common sense, man on the street approach' in his approach to social/political debates, but that act would get old quickly.

When he was doing the political talk with Annie, it was horrible. He watch Hannity and Colmes at night, and went in the next day, and still had trouble getting the talking points out. Same with Annie.

Where would they find a spot? Maybe in middays before Rush? It seems like WLS is pretty well set with most of the lineup, and I wouldn't anticipate them fiddling with the ratings they have now.

The slot between Don & Roma and Rush has been weak for years. Eileen and that Texas redneck, then Eileen by herself (whatever happenned to her deal?), now I hear some new dope.

Their ratings beat the hell out of the score's. What exactly would North add? He's not on a top 20 station in the market, he barely beat 1000, who also isn't a top 20 station. The combined ratings of the 2 stations still won't get them into the top 10. It is a niche market they have and target, certainly not a broad based targeted audience. So why would they hire a dope? Maybe for a small amount of money, but he certainly won't bring over a large audience.

WLS is a conservative station, but they don't really have any knee-jerk reactionaries. I guess if they are looking for that, he's their guy.

I think Mike needs a voice of reason-like Jiggets. Then when he goes off on some rant and needs to be reined in, whether the subject is sports or politics or whatever, that person can do a little damage control. Left to his own devices, he is too much of a loose cannon. He has never been the same since his days with Jiggets-a strong voice of reason who also was a caring and compassionate guy, who knew where to draw the line between being entertaining and a bit controversial, and being confrontational and someone who damages relations between his station and a player or member of management-that you may want to retain a working relationship with.

Yes, I cannot take Jiggs every day. He's a nice guy, and he's not an idiot or anything, but not everything is as positive as he makes it out to be.

Mike's pretty unlistenable at this point IMO. I listen to the station for about 8 hours each day, and I can almost stand Murph more than SouthSide Mike.

We all know North is about a $500K a year guy? I think that is what Mac is getting? I have no idea about revenues and ratings, but in either case I would venture to guess that Mike North is doing three times better than Mac's show in either?

The question is how many times would papi shove or hit Harry, if Harry worked with papi!?1?!

The precious moment would be to see Papi's reaction when he hears the stations first offer to him. The moment would be a classic one.

I say he doesn't even respond to them in any method.

North is around 1 million/year.
Mac is around 600k/year.

Either way, it's way too much for a radio host who works four hours a day (of course the same can be said for professional athletes).

I am serious. That's a lot of money for someone to just sit and talk sports for four hours (that time includes all the commercial breaks et al, so in actuality, it's more like two and a half to three hours). Take into account an hour or so for a production meeting and it's still well short of the eight hours a normal working person has to endure. Add the perks like the free product or sporting events you get to attend because of where you work and that's a pretty sweet gig. You just need to watch sporting events and read all the sports pages and be able to express a knowledgable opinion.

Now I know Mac has repeatedly said that "if you think it's so easy why don't you do it." Well, me personally, I couldn't do it because I don't have an outgoing personality. I more reserved, quiet, shy. But there are a lot of people out there that could probably sit there and give their opinions, but chose a different profession. I'm not belittling them. But if someone who has no college education and was once a hot dog stand owner who now makes a million dollars to rant about sports isn't considered making too much money, then I don't know who is.

It's a nice life once you get there, but you have to go through a lot of grunt work to get there and a lot of people never make it in the industry. It's like being a professional athlete. The people who make it get tons of money but there are plenty of people who end up playing every day in the local park and working at McDonald's.

For every person who gets the level of success of being a host in prime time in a major radio market there are 100 guys who tried to do it and failed. This is not the case for someone who goes to college, gets an entry level job, and slowly works his way up through the company. There is no way that I end up not reaching a certain level of success in my industry.
