Dude only struck out 3 times in a game once. Great pure hitter. He was especially good against Maddux, and he missed a good amount of time due to injuries. That's really all I got that hasn't been posted yet.

Big fan of this guy as a kid when I used to care about baseball. I rarely give a shit about the passing of athletes or celebrities but this is one I spent about thirty seconds thinking about.

Definitely a throwback type player. A guy who put the ball in play and didn't walk or strike out a lot.

That article tells me more about the guy than any of the stuff I'd heard up til now.

Loved Tony...he and Dawson are my favorite hitters...I heard an old interview on some station while driving a couple weeks ago and Gwynn said he was drafted by the Padres n l.a. clippers on the same day...he didn't think he was tall enough for the NBA so he went to the Padres ...he always used a small bat because his dad would throw him figs as a child and he would hit the figs with a broom stick.

Pussification of America.

... there's very rarely a decent reason to not watch Olbermann's opens, or the rest of the show really ...

8) Well done by Olbermann. He really brought a lot to the rememberance by having so much personal
contact with Gwynn. Good to know that he was really that sort of guy on and off the camera. Huge loss
to the world of baseball.

Just watched the Olbermann piece. Very well done. Hard to imagine there ever being a better dude in the sports world than Gwynn.

It made me wonder why it seems so rare that we see level headed, down to earth guys in sports. Sure there is a shit load of money and fame thrown at some of these guys in a short period of time, but why aren't there more people who seem capable of dealing with it? Guys who don't go out of their way to be d-bags or act too cool for everything? They are playing children's games for a living. They had to be fans at one time or another....or so you'd think. Just really makes me sad when we lose genuine people who are also great players...

Tony Gwynn likely didn't grow up playing on a travel team where everybody played as long as parents had the $ and didn't get a participation ribbon at the end of the season either.

That type of thing today has ruins certain aspects later in life. Some people are just assholes, but some are conditioned to be that way.
