yeah, and melo was kicking and screaming and clawing at the court in Denver trying to stay there... :D

Traded to the Knicks.

This is the first time he gets to make the decision on his own.

I presume that he has opted out so that it opens up the possibility to restructure his deal to bring in the next superstar to help them in their march to greatness again. Obviously that only works if the other two opt out as well. Assuming that, I'm somewhat interested to watch what Wade does as I'm curious if he's actually interested in anything other than his own self as far as fame and fortune are concerned.

I think he is opting out to again have the chance to hear other team's pitches. And to put pressure on ownership. It's been reported lately he doesn't like a lot of the financial decisions they made. This is good leverage.

This won't sell well in Cleveland or Chicago.

Looks like a good fit for the crunchy granola chicks and health-conscious gays in the Bay area.

If Lebron will go to the in-recent-years more difficult Western Conference. In the immediate future (next 2 seasons?), Western Conference will still be much deeper than the Eastern Conference. Beyond that, it could easily flip and the Eastern conference become the tougher conference. And the Bulls/Pacers should be even tougher playoff outs in 2015.

So if LeBron's looking at another 4-5 years somewhere besides Miami, might as well go with the best team/situation for him regardless of conference.

So the casual NBA fans think the offseason is more exciting. The NBA fans disagree. This isn't really news and it sure as hell doesn't indicate the NBA is in trouble. Part of the reason that it's such big news is because there isn't shit else going on in sports during the summer.

Are you really suggesting NBA basketball is more popular than MLB? The NFL guys at least have good arguments. The NBA is a niche sport like muskie fishing.

I thought that most NBA fans pretty much agreed that the NBA regular season is relatively meaningless and not much of true significance happens outside of injuries.

Every regular season can be construed as boring except for football.

The NBA occupies a weird middle ground between the casual-fan ubiquity of the NFL and the cultish devotion of the NHL. It has a little of both, but neither one is exactly what I'd call its calling card.

No, I don't think that's true. It's not as meaningful as football games are due to the number of them, but I don't think any NBA fan would call the regular season meaningless.

The problem with the NBA is virtually every team worth anything makes the playoffs. At least in baseball you have good teams who still don't make it.

So what were a few of the meaningful results from the regular season last year?

Yeah that's just silly. If the NBA isn't more popular than MLB yet, it will be very soon considering the demographics of each league's fanbase.

Yes but the vast majority of baseball teams on the other hand play for nothing because of the system you're praising. I'm of the view that the NBA needs contraction, though I know that will never happen.

It will never happen. Just like soccer will never surpass anything in the U.S. in spite of its demographics.

Bad analogy. NBA is already crushing baseball in ratings. Baseball is closer to soccer now than basketball is.

Bring Lebron and Allen both here. Jesus is in fantastic shape, and could probably play till he's 45.
Quote:
Sources: Ray Allen prefers to play

After briefly considering retirement following the Miami Heat's loss in the NBA Finals, Ray Allen is leaning toward returning for a 19th season in the NBA, according to sources.

Allen has a desire continue playing alongside LeBron James, whom he developed a close relationship with during their two seasons together in Miami, whether it is with the Heat or another team. James and Allen vacationed together last week after the Heat were beaten in the NBA Finals by the San Antonio Spurs.

James notified the Heat Tuesday that he is opting out of his contract and will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Both James and Allen will be unrestricted free agents. Miami's Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh could choose to opt out as well. Neither has announced their plans.

"No news here yet," Wade said Tuesday.

Allen, who will turn 39 on July 20, played 79 games in the regular season and all 20 postseason games, averaging 9.3 points on 41 percent shooting.

After the Heat lost in Game 5 of the Finals, Allen said he felt good about his career and had a clear mind as he faced his summer options.

"One thing is for certain, to [make a retirement decision] on my terms is the most important thing," Allen said. "Whether that is me retiring, staying here or going somewhere else, it will be on my terms. I've made it to this point and I felt great that I have the choice to make it for myself."
