I don't even think that's a fair way to judge GarPax, but off the top of my head...

2013: I'd rather have Dieng, Plumlee, or Hardaway Jr than Snell
2012: Probably some better players than Teague
2011: Chandler Parsons

How else can you judge it? If the Bulls took the best available player or the player that filled a need (good P'S were on the board the year after they drafted Rose) and that player is clearly better than everyone else then it is safe to say the Bulls got it right. There was a lot of BAD after Teague so even there they didn't miss unless you look at a guy like Sacre.

Aguirre couldn't shoot the ball as well as McDermott on his best day.

Not really though. He gets a lot of rebounds on a shitty team and he rarely plays in the post.

That's not true though. He plays in the post all the time.

I will say that he often values rebounds more than contesting a shot and that would be irksome as hell on a team you root for. He's a flawed player. But there's really nothing to suggest McDermott is better at anything basketball related than Love is right now.

No, right now he's just a guy who has never played an NBA game. But I do think he's better compared to someone like Love than to Korver or Jimmer Fredette. I think a lot of people are going to be surprised at how good McDermott is in this league. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he's the best guy to come out of this draft.

I would be utterly shocked if he is the best player from this draft. I hope you're right though.

That's probably true, but Aguirre was a pretty good shooter. He just isn't really known for it because he could score in a lot of different ways. Anyway, McDermott isn't just a shooter either. He looks to me like a guy who can be a premium NBA scorer rather than some kind of ancillary piece part.

It's pretty ironic that so many people who are so eager for the Bulls to get Love are complaining about this draft pick when Love is a better comp for McDermott than all the other guys people are naming. If McDermott had the exact same career that he did but was a black guy, he might have been the number one pick in the draft.

You think Love and McDermott are comparable?

Man I am not sure on that. Love is 6'10" and can play in the post, rebounds the hell out of the ball.

McDermott is a tad under 6'8" and while he can do some things in the post is not really a post player and he does not have the rebounding ability that is even close to Love.

They do both seem to have the ability to get their shots off in unusual ways and find ways to score.

The more I watch things on McDermott I am hopeful that he can be a solid contributor. But I am by no means sold on the pick.

But I find the people here who bitch about it and have more than likely not watched hardly anything on the guy to be really annoying.

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say that a guy who has never played an NBA game was going to be like a perennial All-Star, but I think McDermott is probably a stronger post player than Love already. Sure, Love is bigger, but what difference does that make? As bigfan likes to point out he usually plays like a guy who is 6'2".

Anyway, there's obviously a bias against McDermott based on the color of his skin as evidenced by all the comparisons of him to these heavy-legged driveway shooters when he's nothing like that. He's strong and athletic and just happens to have a hell of a jumpshot. He's more like a taller Mark Aguirre than he is like Adam Morrison.

McDermott measured 6'6''.5 at the combine. Do you think he's going to be playing in the post all that much? I sure wouldn't expect that he would, especially in today's game.

He also lacks explosiveness and isn't that great of a ballhandler. When he beats defenders off the dribble, it's usually because he has excellent anticipation/vision and is moving as soon as he gets the ball and before the guy guarding him even gets into a defensive stance. Do you think he's going to be driving to the hoop a lot in the NBA? I sure don't.

He is clearly an excellent shooter, sometimes even with a defender in his face. That's what he will be in the NBA--a jumpshooter, and probably a very good one. There's a spot for guys like him on just about any NBA club, but he'll never be a star, or even someone who is a top 4 player on a championship-caliber team.

I think he can be a star in the league, at least if scoring a lot is what makes a star. They may have gotten a Carmelo type scorer without making a trade or signing a free agent. I certainly wouldn't predict that, but it's not going to surprise me either.

As far as his height is concerned, it always makes me laugh when bernstein gets into an argument with a caller about an inch or so. I wonder how many guys who are listed at 6'8" really are. Being tall is certainly helpful under the basket, but guys like Aguirre, Dantley, and Barkely were all undersized guys who could score from the post very well. I'm not saying he can defend the post, but he's a dangerous scorer on the blocks.

I've heard too many comparisons to guys like Steve Alford which I have to assume are only based upon his shooting stroke and the color of his skin. McDermott is much more versatile than that.

He's 6'7 3/4" with his shoes on (You play basketball in shoes) so I don't think it would really be a stretch to say he is 6'8".

Really, man?

In 30 years I'll be 57 so it's not really a stretch to say I'm almost 60.

I agree. Since he's closer to 6'8" you go with that. This isn't a 5'11" guy being listed at 6'2".

Yes, I will be extremely surprised if he regularly drives to the hoop in the NBA. He's simply not that good of a ballhandler. And he lacks a quick first step.

And are you seriously comparing McDermott to guys like Barkley or Aguirre? McDermott has a very different body type than those two and is beginning his career in an era where classic low-post play has been de-emphasized in part due to significant rules changes. The idea that he is anything approaching Melo's offensive equal is also preposterous. Melo is quicker, stronger, a better ballhandler and has better balance. What do you mean by scoring a lot, anyway? 25 ppg? He will never be a primary or secondary scoring option on a good team, in my opinion, so it will be impossible for him to achieve such a stat.

Doug McDermott will be Jud Buechler, without the volleyball career to fall back on.

Next season I believe he'll be better than what we got from Dunleavy this year. He'll be a pleasant surprise for many of you.

IMO his floor is Wally Szczerbiak and his ceiling is a poor man's Paul Pierce.

 I can't believe you're sticking with Wally as a floor. You should at least have enough sense to admit that every single player in the draft's floor is a total bust/out of the league in 4 years.

I understand what you are saying but he isn't going to play for the Pistons. I think Thibs and Pops will get the most out of just about every player. That's why I can't imagine him being a bust.

Yup. Been reading up on him ever since the rumors started. I like him quite a bit. Offensively, it's perfect for the Bulls. This guy is an elite shooter. Not good, not very good, elite. If that was all he brought, it'd be nice, but not necessarily worth it. But he brings a lot more than that. He's also just a tremendous scorer. Great instincts, reads defenses, moves well without the ball. He won't create offense so much, but in a system like the Bulls run, he'll find spots to get shots off, and his elite shooting will allow him to score efficiently. He's crafty as fuck. He's got the Dirk one-foot stepback, he'll run to the post and make a quick post move, he'll run his defender off screens. I think he's better than Dunleavy right now. In fact, I think they should trade Dunleavy, and give McDermott his role. His strengths fit our system. Numerous breakdowns of his game note that he'd excel in a system that features ball-movement, but would fail in a iso-dominant system. The Bulls are just about the best fit for him in the NBA.

He's bad defensively. But so what? So is Dunleavy and so was Korver. The Bulls defensive system will minimize this deficiency. The other thing is that he's basically a finished prospect. You can say that's a bad thing, but with where the Bulls are, it's a good thing. Thibs won't give any minutes to guys who are working on their game. Doug will play considerable minutes this year. Book it. And he'll put up a lot of points for this squad, and will be a big part of making them a respectable team from the arc, where they've previously been a total shit-show.

McBuckets was the best player in the NCAA this year, but a fairly large margin. He's a finished product, so there's not a ton of upside, but Jud Buechler? Not even close.
