This has gotta be a way to pressure Phil into giving him the max. LA is being used because unlike Chicago, they can offer the max. The Lakers have a worse roster than NY, and they play out west. I call BS on Melo to LA EXCEPT if LBJ goes too.

I thought it was reported that NY offered him the max already?

No. I think Phil asked him if he would take less for roster flexibility.

The Knicks went coast to coast to let Carmelo Anthony know they want him to stay in New York.
Team officials traveled to Los Angeles on Thursday night to meet with the free agent and offered him the maximum contract allowable, a person with knowledge of the details said.

Yeah, in the story quoted above it says Anthony was bothered y Phil asking him to take less than the max. I dont know if that means Phil did that in the recent past or he's still doing that now. All recent reports say Phil verbally offered the max, but maybe Anthony wants to make him put up or shut up. LA sucks. You'd only go there at this point if you were younger, like Kevin Love.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS LEVERAGE IN CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS.

Phil got all the leverage. Melo wants to get paid.

Cowley saying Bulls haven't been told 'no' yet, but all sign and trade offers have been rejected.

Quote:
If Anthony flips the switch on popular opinion and decides to sign with the Bulls as a free agent — especially because attempts at a sign-and-trade have been turned down — the rights to Mirotic likely would have to be shopped, especially if Mirotic’s days with Real Madrid have ended as badly as reported and the NBA is his only option.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/28498013 ... 7i3PPldXO4

If I'm the Knicks, why not just pull the plug on Anthony and do a sign and trade? A rebuilding project is probably not the way Phil wants to start his tenure, but even if they get Melo at 110-129 million or whatever over 5 years, it's still hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel for them. You'll have Melo's contract taking up huge space and then really you're just waiting until your roster's contracts expire since virtually no one has any trade value whatsoever.

Melo lives in LA and his wife is an entertainer so signing with them wouldn't be that strange.

Signing with them outright would be, IMO, because it means he leaves 30+ million on the table. Why not just stay in NY and take the thirty mil?

A sign and trade to LA might make more sense, but then who do the Lakers send back? Also, like I mentioned earlier, I think any sign and trade between LA and NY would have to be scrutinized closely because of the potential conflict of interest issues between Phil and Jeanie Buss.

They can give New York a $20M trade exception.

To me that's the only way LA makes sense - if there's a Heat-style merger between at least two stars. It's not enough to join Bryant, they need two new stars to make them respectable. Otherwise that's one of the worst rosters in the league.

Kings low-balled Isaiah Thomas. Lakers still have Nash? Possibly they bring in Isaiah Thomas and Nash coaches him up.

Luol Deng picked a bad time to be a free agent? Tho there is a lot of cap space around, just not with teams anyone wants to play for.

Maybe Deng takes a 1/2/3 year deal with the Lakers and tries free agency again after playing with:

Gasol
Melo
Deng
Kobe
Thomas/Nash

That's a playoff team but not championship caliber.

I agree. I think they'd need an outside sharpshooter/3 point specialist as well. And Omer Asik/Hibbert/G Monroe type to help out protecting the rim.

And I forgot:

Chicago is still in the running despite the fact that the Bulls, barring a sign-and-trade, cannot come close to matching the max deals the Knicks and Lakers offered Anthony last week. However, the Bulls do allow Anthony to stay in the Eastern Conference, play in the large market and join a contending team.
Knicks president Phil Jackson, despite hints to the contrary, offered Anthony a max deal of five years, $129 million. The best the Bulls can do is $75 million over four years. If it was just about taking the most money, Anthony already would have announced his intentions to rejoin the Knicks. But Anthony is intrigued by the Bulls as well as the Lakers, who have the ability to give Anthony a max deal ($96 million) over four years.

These guys are all douchebags.

It would be nice for the Bulls to give up already and move on. We don't need to end up with the "Carlos Boozer Consolation Prize" during FA this season.

If Gasol is the consolation prize, the Bulls will have to settle for a consolation to the consolation prize since he's not coming here either.

I agree with Nas on Melo waiting. I will not be surprised if there is a Heat-like merging of stars this off-season.

What is the latest on Love?

There is no talk because MN isn't trading him. They may trade him at the deadline, though.

Phil is working on Anthony and James splitting all the money the Knicks have available. Take that, Jerry Krause!
