Michael Brooks Kieschnick (born June 6, 1972) is a former American baseball utility player and pitcher who played six seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played the majority of his career for the Chicago Cubs and the Milwaukee Brewers, and also played for the Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies from 1996 to 2004. He batted left-handed but threw right-handed. During the initial part of his major league career, he was exclusively a position player, playing the outfield; for his final two seasons in the big leagues, he served primarily as a relief pitcher who also occasionally doubled as an outfielder and pinch hitter.

Kieschnick played college baseball at the University of Texas at Austin for the Texas Longhorns from 1990 until 1993, when he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. After two seasons with the team, he was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 1997 expansion draft. However, he never played a major league game for them and played only in the minor leagues during his tenure with the organization. Although he was originally projected to be a hitter, he eventually revived his career by returning to pitching, which he excelled at during his years at the Texas Longhorns. He was signed by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2003 and played his final major league game for them on October 3, 2004. Kieschnick is best known for being the only player to win the Dick Howser Trophy twice.[1]

Felix Pie:

Pie was a highly touted young prospect, and put on the fast-track to reaching the big-league club, although he did not start the 2007 season in the major leagues. Pie's strikeout rates continued to be much higher than average. Pie was called up from Triple-A Iowa on April 17, 2007, and was in the starting lineup, replacing the injured Alfonso Soriano. At the time of his call-up, Pie was batting .444 with one home run and six RBI in 36 at-bats. Before the 2007 season, Pie was ranked as the number one prospect in the Cubs organization.[2] He was nicknamed "The Cat."

Pie got his first major league hit on April 17, 2007, a double off Greg Maddux of the San Diego Padres. He scored his first run in the same inning on a Derrek Lee hit. In the same game, Pie also threw a runner out at home plate from center field which gave the Cubs a chance to win the game. On April 23, Pie changed his number from 17 to 20. Pie recorded his first major league home run on April 27, 2007, off Anthony Reyes of the St. Louis Cardinals. Pie was sent back down to the minors, but he was recalled on June 3, 2007 and remained with the club until July 13, when he was sent back down to Triple-A to get more regular at-bats.[3] However, the Cubs recalled Pie from the minors in order to replace an injured Alfonso Soriano and Ángel Pagán on August 8, 2007. On August 9, Pie was brought back up to Chicago.

When the Cubs traded their starting left-handed center fielder Jacque Jones in November 2007, general manager Jim Hendry indicated that the club wasn't necessarily looking outside for a veteran, with Pie and Sam Fuld in the mix. Fuld pushed Pie for the center field spot during spring training (Piniella in late February said that Pie was only "a head or nose in front" of Fuld).[4][5][6] "He's ready to go out there in spring training lined up next to Pie and compete to play center field," Hendry said of Fuld. Pie fell victim to the spring training 2008 injury bug that afflicted the Cubs. Originally deemed "a minor surgery on the groin region," Cubs.com reported the injury as "a twisted testicle", an injury more commonly known as testicular torsion. The surgery involved sewing the outer layer of the testicle to the scrotum wall.[7] The surgery was deemed successful, and Pie reported back to spring training.[8][9][10]

Pie won the center field job competition in spring training, and started opening day in center field. However, due to a slow start and the signing of former Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Reed Johnson, Pie by May 2008 was utilized mostly in a platoon with Johnson and as a defensive replacement. The Cubs signed Jim Edmonds on May 14, 2008, and optioned Pie to Iowa to get some more work and play everyday.

The past failures of the Cubs to draft and develop prospects really has no bearing on the current crop of prospects. The entire scouting, drafting, and development staff has been changed. The philosophy is different as well.

He had one year similar to what Bryant is doing and it was his 4th year in AAA and he was 24

Other than that they are exactly the same.

He dominated every fucking level and was considered the next Babe Ruth.

Not really. His minor league numbers in his time are comparable to Bryant's. Those seasons at Midland and Wichita are unreal for the time. He was thought of the same way.

Here's another guy. In the conversation for the best athlete ever to come out of Evanston. He was a another "can't miss" Cub.

Earl Cunningham
I saw him play against Kane County, he was in the clean-up spot.
The manager pinch hit for him in a lefty/righty situation with one out and the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
Nobody pinch hits for the clean-up hitter.

You're never going to talk me (and probably not many people) into hating minor league analysis. I dont get why you even care.

I think a lot of that was more him being the ANTI Sosa and the fact that they had so many free swingers and he was seen as a good OBP guy.

But you're right, he was loved

No one can be considered a "phenom" without showing something.
Pawelek wasn't a phenom, nor was Rosinski or Karl Pagel.
Gary Scott was a phenom, as was Bobby Hill and Corey Patterson and Felix Pie..
They were expected to be Cubs very quickly.
Some of the guys mentioned were hoped for to make it to the next level from where they were.

Saw Earl Cunningham in spring training once when I was a kid and he had massive power. In defiance of the laws of physical nature the ball just jumped off of his bat. The sound was akin to Randy Gradishar's head hitting Earl Campbell's steel thigh pad.

Bobby Hill was a heavy juicer but he just looked like a major-leaguer. Great swing, great habits. At least some.
