I dont like these types of questions... I'll be happy if he contributes to a winning team. The manner in which he does it matters little to me. If the team sucks and he plays like Bonds, it wont make me feel better about the season.

Okay. But then you may as well not discuss prospects. They may all be traded for Kershaw and Kemp.

Of course not. If that's what Baez becomes for the Cubs then Theostein will have failed to sell high on him.

But I'm being accused of being unreasonable when that seems like a good outcome for him.

I dont agree with that. It's fun to see what players you have in the pipeline and try to predict who will be good/bad/great/traded.

That is not a good outcome for him. Baez was drafted top-10 with what is considered the quickest bat in the minors and ability to play shortstop.

Jhonny Peralta with more power is a good outcome.

Hank is correct. These questions dont work.

Expectations evolve and how good the team around him is matters.

Mark Reynolds hit 40 homeruns in a season though. So that's fine.

You're being unreasonable because you keep pounding Baez for a two month slump and ignoring all the dominant months that flank them.

That first post with Wilkins reads like Baez has never been good at any level but someone just decided he was.

No. I'm pounding Baez because he strikes out at a ridiculously high rate and has done so at every level. And becaue he is questionable defensively and in spite of playing short in the minors has no defined position.

But you got mad when I asked you to compare him to a big leaguer he might be like and got all philosophical about fitting into a winner.

I'm not mad, you are the one posting twice about it

I wont be happy or disappointed if he becomes Mark Reynolds. It all depends on what happens around him. If he is slugging 35 HRs and striking out all the time and they are winning I'll be fine.

Wow, that's a lot of analysis for not seeing him play, isnt it? Or are you relying on experts now?

So yeah, again you completely omit the dominant offensive statistics (.888 and .979 OPS) and focus on defense.

Oh and he strikes out about the same rate as Mike Trout

and Conor Gillaspie is having a decent (1.8 WAR to date) year. Its not a long shot that Baez will have a decent year

Is this even a choice? A decent offensive / average to below average shortstop vs a Cy Young caliber pitcher?

Mark Reynolds sucks right now, he has the power of a punching Judy hitter at the moment.

When it was posted in 2012 it was a little closer

I don't need to see him or rely on experts to see his Ks. I can read a box score.

Are we now comparing him to Mike Trout? I guess with Baez and Jackson you have two Mike Trouts. You're all set!

Really?

You're gonna do this now? Ok, I guess JORR isnt as smart as I gave him credit for and I have to explain this

Im not comparing Trout to Baez, Im providing an example of a guy with a "ridiculously high strikeout" rate who is still a huge success in MLB.

But you already knew that.

This pretty much all boils down to: You dont like the Cubs. You dont like Cub fans and you want them to lose forever. You hope that every prospect fails so you can throw it in the face of Bernstein and the other 3 people in the world who actually believe the things you attribute to most Cub fans.

 I knew you were going to get angry.

But as long as we're "come oning" each other, were you really comparing one guy's strikeouts vs. A and AA pitchers and another guy's vs. Chris Sale and Sonny Gray, et al?

Again, not a comparison. Just having to "explain" that the strikeouts are not the red flag you make them out to be. (to a guy who absolutely knows that) Giancarlo Stanton struck out a ton in the minors

Im not angry, its more disappointment.

You know more about baseball than anyone here but your thoughts on the two Chicago teams are completely biased.

Let's talk about the Blue Jays or something.

I think strikeouts are bad and they are worse when run production is lower. It's one thing when guys are striking out 150 times and hitting 40 or 50 homers. It's another thing when a ton of guys are striking out that much and 35 is probably going to lead the NL. Maybe Baez is a guy who can hit 40 in this environment. I doubt it. I was positive Abreu was going to hit 30, but I wouldn't predict him for 40.

Anyway, it's not really about the Cubs. Their prospects are just the ones I'm currently hearing about constantly. In the past it's been other teams. Like the "Moneyball draft" that yielded such greats as Nick Swisher and Mark Teahen. I just don't believe in hyping up prospects. I've see way too many of them bust out and far more be just ordinary players.

Yeah. But you do know you just listed four guys who haven't won a World Series.

A lot of guys think a World Series is a foregone conclusion. If there were a crystal ball and it showed that Kris Bryant will never play on a Cubs World Series winner, many Cub fans (I didn't say you) would be distraught.

And so would you if I told you Sale would never play on one. Wouldnt you?

I want them to Win a World Series. Maybe its different after your team wins one (couldnt tell ya!)
