I think the improvements in defense are being vastly overrated.

The defensive line depth is way way way overstated. Very few rookie defensive linemen excel in their first year and the few that do are elite talents or one-trick ponies.

In essence, a line of Allen, Houston, Ratliff, Paea and Young is what the Bears will sport. The run defense will be greatly improved but I do not see the sacks there.

Similar to d-line, the safety play will be better simply because it'd be really hard to be worse than last year.

Fuller needs to kick ass right away as Jennings/Tillman/Hayden are all over 30+.

The linebacker corp will be interesting. The d-line should help in the run game but can Briggs and Williams get to where they need to go if the back gets to the 2nd level? I foresee TE absolutely killing the Bears this year.

I think the 2-3 years prediction is more likely once Emery brings in more youngbloods. The offense is for sure set.

I know. I just look at the recent Super Bowl winners and they've all been able to sack the QB and shut down the passing game. Other than QB that's the most important characteristic a SB Champion has.

Yes. I think Ware, Peppers and Allen all will struggle as 30+ year-olds. Ware and Peppers at least have Miller and Matthews drawing attention to put them in advatageous match-ups to hide their rapid declines. Young and Houston are excellent run defenders but I do not think they're pass rushers. I see Houston as a Phillips Daniels type.

I'm OK with that. Just need pressure on the QB, you dont need to always get there.

I know it happens every year but it's pretty unbelievable how "Everything got better" is pretty much the standard opinion.

So, is anything below 13-3 a regular season disappointment?

It feels stupid to say because it is like "I think they'll be average! I'm really smart and know a lot about football!" but I just don't see the remarkable improvements that others do. We are relying on Jared Allen to come in and not continue his decline.

The Bears just seem stuck in a perpetual cycle where they won't be terrible and they won't be great. That isn't a good place when so many of your important players are now 30+.

Actually, looking at it, I think they'll go into week 17 at 9-6 with a win and get in scenario

The question is, if this isn't the year, what can the Bears possibly do to generate any hope for next year? If Cutler doesn't break a 90 QB rating for this year and the team misses the playoffs yet again, what possible excuse will the Bears come up with? Emery and/or Trestman would have to be fired, right?

I see 2 probable losses on that. @ SF and @ GB. You could talk me into @NE, @DET or @ATL. Even in my worse case scenario, that leaves 11 wins.
