When Moneyball was written, the Yankees had just won 4 of 5 World Series and were spending money like crazy. Everyone thought that the only way to win was to spend big money.

Since then that thinking has changed a bit. I dont think Moneyball would even be written now.

The problem is when they then use the Red Sox as an example of it working. The Red Sox payroll was huge too.

Yeah, but there were some Moneyball type ideals that led to key signings. David Ortiz and Bill Mueller stick out.

Before Billy Beane wouldn't those have just been called good value signings?

My guess is the White Sox had more Moneyball type ideals than the Red Sox did.

Well, I wouldn't say that, but it is mildly interesting that the '05 White Sox were cast as a smallball team when they relied on shutdown pitching and home runs as much as Billy Beane's A's (and the Earl Weaver Orioles that drew the blueprint for the A's).
