I thought the ending of that movie was perfect...pretty much everyone dies, there is no happy ending for anyone involved...found that part of it so refreshing.

Yup.

Castaway? How should it have ended? Gets back with Helen Hunt? I thought it was a good ending. M

correct. "stripes", "holy grail", "blazing saddles", all scream "we had no idea how we wanted to end this...but we had to somehow."

comedies are usually funniest in the first 20 minutes or the midway point. by the end it's common for them to run out of steam; or at least, that's the most vulnerable part when writing a comedy film.

you know what, though, i've got one for the flip side of this (movies that would have been terrible had it not been for a good/great ending)..."the mist". it's rare that you'll have something like that. but 2/3 of "the mist" is almost unbearable but the last third is outstanding.

Book ending of The Mist was better imo.

for the novella that ending worked fine. but the movie needed a visual ending, something that made a statement. i don't think one is better than the other, they work differently.

The only good selection in the first 3 pages was Fight Club.
The Departed was just a decent movie, that movie should have been better...the writing wasn't great.
The Usual Suspects has a fantastic ending .

"the usual suspects" is a tough one for me. i knew the ending before i saw it, which blew it...but i never, for one second, was entertained by it.

this is a pretty good rant about it...and it's pretty much how i felt. but i rarely comment on the movie because i never got a chance to see it with innocent eyes. i've never had anything positive to say about it, except that it looked good. and provided "scary movie" with a great ending.

Grandma kicks the shit out of Ed Norton and Matt Damon heads to Vegas with three stacks of high society.

Actually, the ending was Disney-ified. In real life, Herb Brooks told the team before the gold medal game, "if you lose this, you'll take it to your fuckin' graves." He left the room, came back and said one more time, "your fuckin' graves!" I think that would have cemented the ending.

Meh not a Kubrick fanboy but I think the fact that everyone hates the second half of that movie is meh. The second half obviously wasn't as powerful by any stretch but was still really good. You all know you have said love you long time at some point.

Oh those few years Edward Norton wanted to act. Even primal fear. Some guy at work saw that movie opening weekend and told me that his character reminded him of me. I didn't see that movie until it came out on VHS. Man was I pissed when I saw it. I woulda killed that guy. Good thing he quit and was long gone.

I love Edward Norton.

The second part of Full Metal Jacket is good.

I can't really disagree with the Usual Suspects review but I love it.

I think what I hated about the departed is that Marky Mark, who was pretty much a prick, won. The 2 characters you were suppose to care about died.

The Departed's ending was abrupt but not bad. The entire movie sucks shit from a dirty rhino's ass, though. Hammy performances, terrible accents, and goofy editing.

it's just that the second half isn't nearly as powerful or riveting as the first half. it's a very uneven film. and all the vietnam stuff had been seen in films like "platoon" and "the deer hunter". kubrick always had a way of being wholly original and he was kind of derivative with FMJ. it's one of his weaker films. his best films were his early ones, especially "the killing" and "paths of glory".

Me too

I watched half of it. Went out that night and made the mistake of bringing up the movie. Someone mentioned how bad ass Spacey is. That was that.

A less ridiculous way of eliminating Tyler and the book ending (Narrator in a mental hospital thinking it's heaven) would have worked.

Not so much that. Its the final scene where he is just staring at the angels in the middle of nowhere. I didn't have a problem with the movie until that point.
