Again, Martin is the league's all-time #4 rusher, and didn't get in until his second ballot. That doesn't really bode well for a guy with similar skills, especially one whose career is coeval with Peterson's.

Are you not a HOFer if you dont make it in on the first ballot?

What's the problem? You mentioned a couple times about not getting in on the first ballot. Who cares?

You're not a HOFer when you consistently cant convert a 3rd and 1 , punch it in from the goal line , or break arm tackles.

So it is your belief that even if Forte gets 15k yards from scrimmage (should be pretty easy considering he's 28 and averaging 1600 yards a season) that he still won't get in because AP is a lock? Even in an era where there are only a few every down RB's? If so I just can't agree with that.

That it took two ballots for the league's 4th-leading rusher of all time to get into the Hall suggests the degree to which running backs, even those with historically great numbers, are no longer valued--a feeling which is likely to increase in intensity. If that's our comp point for Forte, then Forte had better have a similarly accomplished (or superior) career, which is unlikely, since Martin is the 4th-leading rusher of all time. Ergo, I think Martin's career doesn't really strengthen the argument that Forte is a "likely" Hall of Famer.

Better?

I would think RBs being devalued would make it easier for him to get in. Not as much competition. I dont think it matters if it takes 3 or 4 tries. This all assumes health of course, Forte needs to be a compiler to get in.

Forte will never be in the Hall of Fame.

I think McCoy and Gore have a better chance than Forte.

I think the era you played in matters. This is a passing league now that uses multiple backs. Every season since Forte has been in the league only him and AP have consistently been on the list for best running backs in the NFL. Even though Peterson came into the league a year before him he only has 2000 more yards from scrimmage. That's why I believe Forte has a good chance.

No, it's my argument that it's going to be hard for any RBs to get in from now on, and that even a logjam of one further hurts Forte's chances. It's also my argument that extrapolating his age 23-28 seasons to his age 28-?? seasons is more wishful thinking than fact.

You're completely inverting cause and effect here. There aren't fewer every-down backs because of some desperate leaguewide shortage; there are fewer every-down backs because no team really wants every-down backs anymore. That Forte's role is so rare isn't evidence of value. It's actually evidence of the opposite.

Forte nearly had 2000 yards from scrimmage last season and has 9600 yards in 91 games.

I don't think the competition thing matters. I think fewer backs are going to get in, period. It's not like the Hall has to take a certain number of guys from each position.

We see it differently. I believe he has the size and style of play to at least play as long as Martin (11 years) and I believe he is an every down back because the Bears believe he has more value than a 2 back system. Why? Because he can do it all. I also believe that this new era may help him. I completely understand the points you're making and unfortunately we won't know the answer for at least a decade.

Me too. And since this is an era in which no one gives a shit about running backs, I think it will be harder for guys at that position to get in.

Which means that every-down backs are rarer than ever, which is actually a reflection of their lack of value.

A list that is less important now than at any time in the history of the league.

Peterson also has one of the most dominant seasons in NFL history on his resume. If Forte cancompile his way to a major all-time yards-from-scrimmage record, I can certainly see it, but considering everything that has to go right for that to happen, calling it "likely" is a major reach.

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Hall of Famer Michael Irvin visited Chicago Bears practice on Wednesday, and Brandon Marshall continuously bent the former Dallas Cowboys receiver's ear, telling him that in 2014, quarterback Jay Cutler could be the MVP of the league.

Did Irvin believe him?

"I don't think anybody would believe it," Marshall said. "I don't know why they wouldn't believe it. [But] this is a different person. I don't know this guy. I don't know this new Jay Cutler. Maybe his new name is like Joshua or something. This is a totally different guy. Just call him Joshua Cutler. That's what the 'J' stands for."

Marshall "absolutely" believes Cutler could win MVP, citing changes in the quarterback's personal life and a strong supporting cast as his reasoning. Cutler comes off a strong 2013 campaign in which he finished with the second-highest completion percentage (63.1) in franchise history, in addition to posting a career-best passer rating of 89.2.

"I want to see what happens when they have a healthy Jay Cutler," Irvin said. "I asked Brandon that very question; what do you think a healthy Jay Cutler for 16 games [can accomplish]? He said 'MVP in the league.' I said that's high praise right there; you're just going to take Peyton Manning off that shelf and just going to put Jay Cutler right up there like that? That's the way he sees it.

"And that type of confidence with the kind of feeling they have about this offense, and what coach [Marc] Trestman is doing, is just incredible. With the diversity of your offense, you feel good about your opportunities."

Criticized in the past for surliness, heated on-field exchanges with teammates and coaches, not to mention the perception he's aloof, Cutler has turned heads at training camp for what he's done on the field as a passer while also receiving praise for becoming more of a leader off the field.

Quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh recently said Cutler "does things that will never, ever get reported, and you just say, 'Wow, that's unselfish.'"

What's different about Cutler?

"Everything," Marshall said. "It's night and day. He's a totally different person. He's a totally different athlete. He's the first one in the building and that sucks because I've tried to be the first one in the building. He's there at like 5 a.m. He lives it. I think he has great balance in his life now with his personal stuff. I won't go there. He hates when people go there."

Cutler's wife, reality-television star Kristin Cavallari, gave birth in May to the couple's second son, Jaxon Wyatt Cutler. Last October, the quarterback acknowledged he's changed for the better during "The Jay Cutler Show" on ESPN 1000, saying, "I'm in a good place right now."

But Marshall believes his quarterback has changed substantially since that time. Are the changes seriously enough to merit talk of Cutler potentially winning an MVP award?

"Absolutely," Marshall said. "I think with coach Trestman and [offensive coordinator Aaron] Kromer and our offense. ... our offensive linemen are studs. They work together. We have a special group at the skill positions like Matt Forte, Alshon [Jeffery], Martellus [Bennett] and Q [Marquess Wilson]. I think absolutely [Cutler could win MVP]."

This is the year. I can feel it. I wish we had a better backup QB but I think Cutler can and will play 16 games.

I don't think he's a HOF'er but Ill agree rb's aren't as valued as they once were so Im not sure to what criteria his career will be held to when he's done. When I see him play , my mind certainly doesn't say theres a hall of Fame back like it does for AP.

He will need to surpass these Hall of Very Good Players.

With 2 more really good years he'll have over 9000 yards rushing and 4000 yards receiving. Considering how he's taken care of his body and avoided big hits it's not a stretch to believe he could play 3 more years after that and add another 800 yards from scrimmage per season to his totals. In my world those are HoF numbers in an era with very few every down backs.

Yea, so Bettis, LT, AP, Edgerrin James, Ricky Watters, Tiki Barber have better or equal cases to Matt Forte. He'll have to wait behind those 6 before getting in. He's already overshadowed by the younger and superior LeSean McCoy. Hall of Very Good.

These annual puff pieces of Cutler being, or possibly being, a "changed man" suck. If you've got nothing better to write then at least go the other way with your crap and write something intentionally provocative but absolutely ludicrous.
