It's because I don't think you actually believe that.

However, I'm willing to go with its. According to rpb, Theo and Jed are failures if they don't win the World Series in 2015. This should be interesting to track next year.

Tracking another baseball fan's expectations is a little weird

Im not really interested in being the most reasonable fan in the world. I just want to see them win. My expectations will probably always fluctuate and thats...ok

You seem to have a problem with how some Sox fans view the Cubs and the expectations they have. I gave you a chance to prove it wrong and you gave an answer you don't really believe.

The perception is that Cubs fans are still in a "Theo can do no wrong" period. Well, except for you, who thinks he is a failure.

Yeah you believe whatever you want about Cub fans.

Theo has accomplished nothing but restocking the minors. But remember I said winning a WS is an automatic successful GM, so if he wins it was all worth it. If not he failed

So then it is settled. World Series victory or bust for every season going forward.

A little bit extreme for my tastes but we all have a right to set our own expectations.

True, but the likelihood is that whoever signs Lester, Shields, and especially Scherzer is not going to get great value for their dollar. Do you really disagree with that?

well, that depends on a few things...how many more true ace/ #1 starters get created over the next period of time, how much these contracts ultimately get valued to...how can you predict such things? So yes, after a fashion, I disagree.

If someone indicates the Cubs were superior to anyone, that's ridiculous

If its just saying you think a minor league rebuild is the best way to win thats fine.

There's no wrong way to win a WS

I don't want to read the whole thread so I'll just guess.

Theo is the worst GM in baseball at every facet of GMing, and Cubs fans are too dumb to realize it. Am I close?

According to rpb, yes.

According to rpb, yes.

I dont want to be misquoted

I said on a yearly basis I want a World Series. If you dont win, you failed that year. But if a GM ends up winning one, he's not a failure. So you cant make the judgment until either they win a WS or they leave the team

And remember, Theo won 2 World Series in Boston. He just hasnt succeeded in Chicago yet

And again, I want point out how this keeping track of other fans expectations and quotes is really a terrible idea. I hate to play this card but fandom is supposed to be fun on some level.

I reserve the right to be completely unrealistic and hopeful or overly harsh and critical any time at the drop of a hat. This fandom thing is an art, you cant make it science

Your opinion is that every year is "World Series or bust". So, Theo has been a failure every year he has been here and almost certainly will be next year.

The first part I said, the second part is your incorrect assumption that has been explained a few times now.

But seriously, put me down as any kind of fan you want. Then track it. Report on it weekly. Maybe an excel sheet.

I dont mean to come off snarky.

Here is my opinion. Theo gets an incomplete. Because of this rebuild though his expectations have to be higher. If they win a WS during his tenure, he's a success. If they dont, he failed.

My opinion is that you can judge someone on a year to year basis and on a complete tenure basis. Theo may not get fired by the Cubs until 2018. I don't want to wait that long.

Telander asked Kaplan what happens if the Cubs don't win by 2019. And dumbass Kap said, "If they lose 90 games in 2019? Regime change. If they lose 90 games in 2019 TheoandJed are gone." But that isn't really the question. It probably isn't going to be that easy. The likelihood is that the Cubs won't be losing 90 games but they probably won't be dominating baseball and winning a World Series either. Someone is going to have to make the call whether Theo and his many vice presidents and his proprietary systems have been worth what they've produced. If they win a World Series it's easy. Theo is a hero. If they lose 90 games it's easy. Theo is gone. But the odds are huge that it's going to be somewhere in between. If the Cubs from 2016-2019 are like the White Sox from 2006-2008 do you keep Theo or launch him?

I think it is much more likely Theo wants to move on rather than the Cubs. He'd have to be really bad. High draft picks and selling off everything at the deadline has to get you to a base level of competence to keep your job.

I see Theo going back to Boston, possibly even before his contract with the Cubs is up. Then again, he only has two years left after this year, right?

I could also see him going to either New York team. The Mets have a lot of work to do though to be worth it.

I think you can see that the Cubs are building toward something and they will soon be much better than they have been. But I'm not sure that will be satisfactory for most Cub fans (NOT RPB!!!!!!!!!) who seem to have been sold the concept that "we lose badly for a few seasons and then we step into the phone booth and come out as the Yankees." I mean, if the Cubs average 84 wins a season from 2016-2019 and make the playoffs twice without winning a pennant, is that going to be enough?

I think we're hoping for a Blackhawks-esque overnight sensation, but the Cubs don't have three to four Hall of Fame players.

As far as you know

Its hard to set paramters beyond Win the World Series at some point in your tenure. Not every season is the same.

i don't have to be stoneroses86 to tell you that this is never going to happen. i used to have my automatic yankee hate for years up until i actually went out to NYC to see shea and OYS before they closed in sept 08 (catching david price's MLB debut @ the latter 8) )

the one thing i remember being dumbfounded by was all of the respect i got for wearing an angels cap and an expos GUERRERO/27 jersey. nobody at YS, or all of manhattan/bronx, talked shit to me at all, instead coming up to say things like "the angels? man you guys have been kicking our ass lately... why are you wearing an expos jersey? * vlad 'em up * holy shit dude that guy's a badass ballplayer who i desperately wanted in 2004. that guy's the goods.... you having a good time out here? what are you drinking?"

and i was just..... wow. keanu reeves level whoa. i was raised by most of baseball fandom to believe that these guys were the enemy... they were the absolute bane of baseball existence and everything wrong with the game.... but then i realized they're just a bunch of wildly successful rich guys in vastly-overpriced seats enjoying their lives... and they dont really have any aggressive outward hate towards others because.... wait for it.... THEY'RE NOT WILDLY JEALOUS OF ANYBODY ELSE'S SUCCESS BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE MOST!

it felt weird going to a baseball game and not being able to buy a shirt that says [LATIN PLAYER/MANAGER] CUTS MY LAWN.

so if you tell me that the cubs are going to even begin to embark on a process to become.... that, well i'll just laugh at you. there's a reason i couldn't be a cubs fan growing up in a family of cubs fans.... i was at that damn ballpark ~5 times a year every year as a kid. it's...... i mean, 108+ years? no doubt horrible coincidence and in no way indicative of a fundamental flaw in the whole "cubbie thing."
