I read the hitting coach ended up managing the team for the rest of game. I didn't see any highlights, but how did that all work with having enough guys to coach first/third, and do whatever?

This could be one of the worst plays I have ever seen. (From yesterday's Colorado/Milwaukee game)

Couldn't find a gif of the whole play, but here's the video:
http://m.mlb.com/video/v33918329/milcol-brewers-clear-the-bases-on-a-wild-pitch

This catcher should be taken out back, and shot.

What the hell happened to Justin Masterson. He couldn't make it out of the 3rd tonight. He's been a giant pile of shit this year.

Verlander getting lit up on MLB Network. 5-0 Dodgers, top of the 1st, 2 out.

Uribe just hit a 2 run HR off of Verlander.

Verlander's FIP is 4.02 as opposed to his 4.71 ERA (today's game not included, of course)

That is

He got the win because he was able to stay in the game and finish six without allowing another run after getting pounded in the first. That's pitching. You don't throw a shutout every time. Didn't the Great Hyun-Jin Ryu get enough "run support" in the first to win?

So five runs in six innings in your book is not always five runs in six innings. What makes the difference? The inning you give up the runs?

Edwin Jackson gives up most of his runs in the first inning. Edwin Jackson = Justin Verlander?

Five runs in six innings is always five runs in six innings, but what it means within the context of two particular games can be drastically different. I would think a guy who watches as much baseball as you do would realize that.

Five runs in six innings is bad. That is as far as I need to think about it.

Depends on the game conditions.

No, let's say it's Wrigley Field with a big wind blowing out and a plate umpire with a strikezone the size of a postage stamp. You fuckin' dumbfuck.

i seem to remember a game back when prior threw baseballs where he was facing the astros down in houston, i believe, and he got ROCKED for 6 early runs by the ~2nd-3rd inning or something, but then he got his act together and managed to go 7-8 without giving up another run after the first 6.

now the cubs.... i really honestly forget if they came back to win the game, or if prior just kept the game tenable for the cubs to mount a comeback which they did most of the way. but i tink that's what JORR's talking about with circumstances factoring in more than the mere fact he gave up 6ER.

So you agree with this article? Abreu's 31 HR should not be as highly regarded as Stanton's 25 HR because of the situational aspect of US Cellular vs Marlins Park.

here's the game i was talking about. the memory is tainted by the fact that prior gave up another run in the 7th, and only went 6.2 i guess this goes to show the innate human desire to spin tall tales out of old fragmented memories.

but what i didn't remember is that he was blasted for 6 runs in the first inning, and then he managed to go another 5.2 innings giving up only one more, and prior to that the cubs were only down 6-4 as he was keeping houston at bay for most of the game, even tho they still lost 7-5.

i remember at the time thinking "damn, prior's good" because he got blasted early in this game and he recovered like a champ. almost like does anyone remember that 1.2IP 8-9ER outing kershaw had @arizona right before he went on his ~40 scoreless innings run? ANYONE?

Well, a guy can only play the games he's scheduled to play in the parks they are in. Kaline and Clemente were very similar players. One guy hit more homers because of his park and the other guy had more triples because of his. That's part of the game.

And you don't get extra credit for hitting longer home runs.

i went to his first start @ wrigley vs the pirates in 2002. it was fucking CUBBIE PRIDE NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in the stands. i literally got chokeholded up against a wall by a guy who had to tell me "HEY burrito, YOU'RE IN CHICAGO.... YOU WEAR A CUBS JERSEY, PREFERABLY SOSA, OR AN URLACHER JERSEY OR YOU GO THE FUCK HOME, OK?!?!!?!?!?!"

yeah i was doing my BP-ish blue baby's-first-vlad-jersey thing because like.... sorry i've got style.

but it was just a night filled with chest-thumping and heavy drinking and the quintessential question that sums up the cubs... "why not us?"

why not you? shit, what are you doing for the next hour? i need a little time to explain it to you.

I was there. I grabbed tickets as soon as i heard he was called up.

Then the night before my aunt called and said she had 10 tickets (my cousin's choir sung the natl anthem)

6ip 10K's and a single I believe. Then he got bombed by the Cards that saturday.

in terms of prior games, this is the best one i went to by a country mile. of course it was the day after the cubs home opener because in 03 if you lot remember we had a bunch of snow so the home opener got pushed back a day to tuesday, where it was still cold as fuck out.

anyways, the pitching matchup for that day was mark prior vs javier vazquez and suffice to say i was entertained. vazquez gave up 2ER and struck out 14 in 7IP, prior went the distance for a CG SHO striking out 12, and one of montreal's relievers got a strikeout so i was like "wow, i just saw a game with 27 strikeouts in it" --- that's why we go to the games, eh?

Maddux referenced it in his Hall of Fame speech when he said Don Zimmer taught him the difference between pitching to win and pitching just good enough to lose. I wish Zim could talk to John Danks.

This is the one when I started laughing as Patterson got hurt running down to first. My friend who took me to the game said he was never going to invite me again.

i was at the hee seop choi ambulance game. that was suitably hilarious. i think me and my uncle were two of ~50 people in the whole stadium who weren't chanting HEE SEOP CHOI as the ambulance drove out through right field.... which as far as HEE SEOP CHOI chants go is about as symbolic as they can get.
