Royals-Tigers game--umps took a run off the board after an appeal of a weird play at 3B. Infield line drive out and quick throw to 3B to double-up the runner at 3B. Runner starts to head back to 3B, but then the throw gets by the fielder covering 3B, so the runner turns around and runs home to score--without ever having tagged up. Umps didn't say anything and the run initially counted. Detroit's dugout appealed and after a long discussion, umps declared the runner out for leaving without tagging up and took the run off the board.

It absolutely drives me crazy when Scully says the pitcher made 92 pitches. He threw 92 pitches. He didn't make them. He threw them. God I hate when he says that.

When I was little, my grandfather made sure I watched Clemente. I didn't have any real appreciation for who/what he did, but at every at bat, my granddad & I were glued to the tv. Clemente was my athletic hero, until Joe Greene & George Brett took their turn.

This week, my sons' and I will watch Jeter (my oldest's favorite) and Konerko (my youngest's favorite) take their last swings. Realizing this is a bit sad....I feel much older. And now I'm reminiscing about my first game with my granddad @ Comiskey in 1971.

What Jeter just did had my 17 yr. old & I talking like when he (or I) were 6 yrs. old. Now I have to go get tix for at least one of these last few (beloved) White Sox games for my boys & I to be there.

Great post RR. I am not a yanks fan but I am definitely a baseball fan and therefore a Jeter fan. Glad to see him go out in style and congrats to him on his pending HOF induction in a few short years.

Realizing that we're only immortal for a limited time

There's a parallel to Jeter in harness racing right now. A horse named Captaintreacherous is retiring in Lexington this week. He was the best horse of his generation and won over $3 million dollars and 20 races at 2 and 3. He came back to race this year at age four and had a little trouble. He was never quite right behind and he ran into a monster named Sweet Lou that he just couldn't beat (neither could anyone else).

Anyway, there has been somewhat of a backlash against the horse. He was a darling of the harness racing media. At times it almost felt as if the writers and broadcasters were trying to make him into the greatest horse that ever lived. He was great, but not that. And now a lot of fans are taking pleasure in denigrating his problems at four instead of celebrating his triumphs at 2 and 3.

No, the horse isn't Bret Hanover or Niatross, but he is great in his own time and own right. And the same thing can be said about Derek Jeter. He isn't Babe Ruth. Neither is anyone else. But there aren't many people living who saw Babe Ruth. And for a generation of fans, Jeter was the all-around best the game had to offer. So fuck Keith Olbermann.

Awesome, going to watch a bad Brewers/Cubs game tonight because my son has never seen the Cubs and we love baseball. Always sad to me when the world series is over, but I start the countdown to spring training.
