I can't say I'm overly excited. When I look at Beckham, I can't help but compare him to Ryan Theriot who is a good player but undersized.

Maybe I'm not giving him enough credit and just not seeing his talent though.

Adding on, he looks like the kind of guy that might come up at SS, but will eventually end up at 2B.

We need more Hawkeye Vince posts.

We used to be packed to the gills with Hawkeyes at this place. Now we seem to have none.

Scouting Report

While no one questions his ability to hit, scouts are split on whether Beckham has the hands to stay at shortstop.

I think the criticisms of him then were off the mark. dude could play SS. he has enough raw power. he's not too small and weak. he "just" had poor pitch recognition and difficulty making contact.

I swear sometimes he would close his eyes when he swung.

He can't hit a fastball. That is a baseline requirement for an MLB player. Even Bernstein can hit a fastball

With the Sox fading as they are, their draft position is improving significantly. Rather than hovering around .500 as many Sox fans predicted, they have slid to 12 games under .500 and they may well end up with a top 5 pick again. They may finish behind the Cubs again, as there is just a 2 game difference between them now, with the Cubs just sweeping the Orioles (after they swept the Sox) and the Sox continuing their downward trend.

Apparently Steve doesn't understand the concept of tank wins.

Steve doesn't understand anything. If he were smart enough to go back and look at the prediction thread from Spring Training, he would have seen that the single most optimistic prediction was that the Sox would be .500, and even that was only said by 2 or 3 people. Most were saying between 75-80 wins. IIRC, I said 77-83 myself.

If the Sox play .500 ball from now until the season ends, they would have 75 wins exactly.

Steve did another great job of showing what an idiot he is here in this thread.

Do you really think this team is capable of playing .500 ball the rest of the way though? I guess if they bring up a bunch of guys and the entire profile of the team changes they might. But the team we have seen the last month isn't playing .500 the rest of the way.

Its possible, but I don't think its very likely.

I just hope they can win Sunday when I'm there. I've only seen them win once over the last two seasons. 0-3 last year, 1-3 this year.

That's exactly how a fan thinks. I don't know anyone who buys a ticket to root for "tank wins".

Sure I do..... Tank wins the position in left field after Garcia is injured, has a couple short hitting streaks, then sucks and can't field his position worth a shit.
