Got back yesterday from my epic yearly Wisconsin trip/tournament. Had a great time and played a lot of golf.
Day 1: Washington County. Picked up my friends from the airport and headed over to Wash Co. Such a nice course and one of the better values in golf. $50 for 18 with a cart, we asked what the 9 hole replay rate would be and they tacked on another $8. We played 9 holes scramble, 9 holes shamble and 9 holes alternate shot. By the end of the day me and my partner were up 5 pts. Gave up on trying to stop slicing the ball and just played the fade off the tee all weekend and as a result I hit just about every fairway, but was only getting them out there about 220-240 yards at most.
Day 2: The plan was to play 36 at Lawsonia, but unfortunately they were aerating the Links so we decided to skip it and play the Woodlands and then head over to Mascoutin for another 18. Continued my summer long trend of good 9, bad 9 as I shot a 41-49-90 at Lawsonia and a 43-46-89 at Mascoutin, both high scores for me at those courses. But, my partner played well enough to give us a big lead after day 2. Both courses were in great shape, but going from the fast greens at lawsonia to the slow greens at Mascoutin really messed with me and I had 5 3putts there after only having 1 at Lawsonia. Drove the ball straight, hitting 78% FIR at Lawsonia and 57% at Mascoutin. GIR was a different story with 39% at Lawsonia and 44% at Mascoutin.
Day 3: A return to Blackwolf Run river course where 3 years earlier all 4 of us played terrible and no one broke 90 and only 2 of us broke 100. 42-42-84, probably the best round of my life. I've had better scores, but not at a course like Blackwolf. Once again, kept it straight hitting 78% FIR as well as 44% GIR. 1.78 Putts per hole is really good for me. Had a terrible forecaddie who cost me several strokes early with terrible reads on the green and on the course. Finally stopped listening to him altogether. Birdied #8 after I told the caddie his putting line looked way off and then I drained it using my own line which was about 3 feet different. Loved the course. Its narrow, but if you can keep it straight its playable. The greens aren't that difficult to get to, especially compared to the next course. Me and my partner left BWR up 23 pts as my partner shot a 78 and our opponents were in the 90s and 100s. Not a fan of paying $400 to play golf, but the course is top notch and so are the facilities. The seats in the golf cart were like Escalades, never seen anything like it.
Day 4: A return to Erin HIlls. Hated this course a couple years ago when I was 4 months out of back surgery #7. Couldn't even finish the round. Much better yesterday although I still struggled with my back and all the uphill walking. Shot a 49-43-92 which I am very happy with al things considered. Had a real bad stretch on 7,8,9 where I went double, double triple. #9 is the worst hole on the course, a tricked out par 3 with sliver bunkers that are virtually impossible to get a fair lie in. Left 3 in the bunker cause I couldn't even get a a club on the ball in the 2 foot wide deep bunker. Caddies we had were great. I continued hitting the ball straight 71% FIR, but only 40% GIR. Putting was bad too, 2.11 and 2.29 when I was on in regulation. I found EH to be the toughest course I've ever played. Off the tee it was easy, but getting to the greens was extremely hard. All the greens were severely elevated and you were chipping to table top plateaus all day. Had several chips hit and go over or come up short cause I picked the wrong club. Wind was howling and in our face 90% of the time. Played the course from the whites and still had several par 4s that weren't reachable in 2 for me. If you can't drive the ball 250+ you shouldn't be playing EH. We won our tournament by hole 6 thanks to my partner playing lights out and breaking 80 with 4 birdies.
The place itself is such a great piece of land. Facilities are top notch and it feels more personalized than Kohler. Paying close to $400 with caddy and tip is a lot, but its definitely one of the premiere courses in the USA and I expect the prices to only go up once they host the 2017 US Open. Easily the toughest walking course in the USA. 8 miles and every tee box is elevated 3-5 stories in the air. Every green is the same way.
Overall I played pretty good, not as good as last year. But, I managed to avoid shanking the ball more than a few times. Still pretty disgusted with what the shank has done to the rest of my game as now I'm fighting slices on all clubs Driver through 5 iron since I'm too scared to get close to the ball for fear of the hossel shank.
Glad the weekend is over, think its time to put the clubs away for the year and put a close on this disappointing and frustrating season. Highlight of the year was definitely the round at Blackwolf. Think I shot a 99 or worse there a few years ago.
