Well, this is fucked up.

I'll start by saying this: I don't condone spanking children. Despite my well-known fondness for children, it may surprise you to know that I'm not a child psychologist or otherwise an expert on rearing children. But from what I've read, it seems like the downsides to spanking children do not justify any possible upsides.

That said....

It's tough where you draw the line between spanking and abuse. I was spanked as a child. My mother was a teacher, and she had a paddle especially designed for spanking from one of the schools she had taught at. When our behavior was especially egregious, my sister and I would get spankings; the bonus rule was if mom had to issue a spanking, dad would double it up when he got home. This was always done somewhat after the incident, explained carefully, and not done in anger. I resented it then, but don't have a huge problem with it now. I can't say either way how it has affected me. Basically, I don't think it affected me very much either way.

In debates with my mother as a child, I'd decry spanking, and she'd relay stories of her youth growing up in the South, where her dad would make her and her siblings walk out into the yard and personally select a switch with which to receive punishment. Belts were also used; the argument being that I was relatively fortunate. So I'm familiar with the whole switch thing.

I don't think I was abused, and I'm uncertain what I think of my maternal grandfather's conduct. I wasn't there, so I can't be sure. I'm not necessarily of the mind that any use of a switch goes far enough to constitute abuse, and should require intervention.

That said...

Jesus fucking christ. How can AP think that's a moderate over-step? I have a 3-year old niece, and no matter what I thought about spanking, there's no way I'd think she'd be eligible for even a moderate spanking in a years time, much less the kind of spanking that'd break skin and be evident a week hence. It's hard to imagine calmly reasoning, and choosing to act that way. This is fucking awful. I don't know what should happen, but honestly, I won't feel bad for AP whatever the result. I don't see it being possible that he's punished too harshly, because there should be pretty harsh punishment. And the fact that he had a son die of abuse makes it even worse; he, of all people, should be sensitive to child abuse. Good god.

Though, as I've said, I'm against spanking... Poppy merely had to utter the word "switch," and all the children were doubtlessly quickly in line. I think it's a lazy thing to some degree. Though it's generally the worse option, it's one that will achieve instant results in some situations. Probably more useful with a large family.

Edit: oh, and "spare the rod, spoil the child." That one was passed on down to me. Ah, the limitless wisdom of the Bible.

Right. If you're going to spank a 4 year old at all, at the very worst, swatting with the hand should suffice. Breaking the skin of a 4 year old is just fucking crazy. The fact that AP doesn't know that tells me he needs some sort of counseling, at the very least.

The Bible is right. I don't believe you should just spank your kids. You have to talk to them and explain why they shouldn't do something. As a kid my father would talk to me for what seemed like an hour before hitting me. I appreciated that more than the approach of my grandmother after he passed. Half the time I didn't know what she had figured out that I done until after she stopped hitting me.

Man, I thought after Ray Rice we learned hitting adult males is perfectly okay and totally different than hitting kids and females, but it turns out that really, some people are perfectly okay with hitting kids too. Like I said though, embrace it, hit everybody. If you were hit as kid, beat the shit out of your parents when they're old and don't listen to you, it's only fair. If you're the old person getting whooped by your kid, Circle of Life bitch!

Not sure if you have kids or not but very few kids figure these things out right away and even when they do they like to take chances.
