Not sure if you have kids or not but very few kids figure these things out right away and even when they do they like to take chances.

So what's the point of hitting them if they can't figure out why they are being hit?

Because they do figure it out. They'll think before they act. It's my belief that if a child only believes you are going to talk to them then they'll take advantage of this. Especially when there are multiple kids. If they belief there is a chance they may get a whooping (for doing something they know they shouldn't do) they may not take that chance. It's the same reason why some of us don't commit crimes as an adult. We fear the punishment of getting caught.

I prefer to think we dont do Wrong things, regardless of the punishment.

God, the South is a fucking gutter. I hate it.

So, we just group everybody together?

How many times does a child need to be hit before they understand why they are being hit? You apparently didn't understand that being bad could result in being hit until after third grade.

In the offseason?

I'm no lawyer like Bernstein Esq but why did it take a 2nd grand jury? I bet this isn't seen as brutal in Texas as it does up here. A different culture y'know?

Sits out this year and does jail time perhaps during the offseason.

I choose to spank my kids if needed. Fortunately I rarely need to. Just calling their names a certain way works for me. It's up to the parent to decide what methods they feel are best to raise their kids. If you have kids and you choose not to spank them that is your choice. Personally I don't like the Caillou approach to parenting.

This is all making sense now.

Roger Goodell knew about this Peterson case. He also knew the video of Rice was coming out. He knew about both of these situations weeks ago. That's why he announced the new "Violence Laws". Cuz those new laws were for women and children. He saw this shit storm coming and wanted to be prepared for it.

I think it's OK for Roger to go ahead and ban Peterson from the NFL. I don't think it will matter much nor does he have to worry about the Players Association fighting it. Because Peterson is going to jail anyway.

And you hit them despite the fact that they may not have the slightest idea why they are being hit. I just don't understand that part of it, it makes no logical sense to me. More power to you I guess.

Maybe they acquired new evidence for the 2nd grand jury. Maybe the 2nd grand jury were more intelligent people. Maybe both. This is Texas as you said.

My mom had a paddle and wrote that verse on it with a black Sharpie... beat the hell out of my brother and me with it. Didn't need a "reason"... we were just bad and all she ever wanted was children who loved her. My dad had no idea. Yes, generations of physical abuse, and I chose to end it by not having children (after 15 years of therapy). My brother seems to do well with his three.

I've been struggling this week with the Ray Rice/NFL story... as a woman (as a human being!), I'm sickened. I want to say "boycott the NFL!" but who am I kidding? Should I contact sponsors? Who cares??

But THIS.... omg... OMG!

What is the timing on this? Did the NFL know this was happening before today?

Adrian Peterson isn't a very bright guy to begin with. The fact that he casually told authorities what he did to his son shows that. He admitted everything to them. He had no idea that by doing this, he indicted himself and made this case easy to prosecute. It's open and shut now because he admitted everything. Which means he had no idea that what he did was a crime. He probably is still thinking he did nothing wrong even at this point. Might not even realize that he's going to jail. Though I'm sure his lawyer has informed him that he's screwed by now.

That and the fact that he has like 20 kids with 20 different women shows he's not a very bright guy.

Roddy White tweeted, and I paraphrase, "I can't have all day AP on fantasy team this week, because he disciplined his kid?"

The tweet has since been removed, followed by the typical "Oh, shit, people aren't going to like this, so I better apologize" apology.

I've seen that on FB too. Most people haven't seen the pictures and they're thinking it was a minor spanking. That's not the case though. He stripped his 4 year old son naked and beat him like a runaway slave. Shark is trying to convince me that this is the tough love we all received as a kid.

You said you were hit as a kid. If fact you said you were hit multiple times. So either you didn't/couldn't associate acting bad with being hit, or the threat of being hit didn't act as much of a deterrent for your bad behavior. These are the only possible outcomes.

It did prevent me from doing things. I was the type of kid that would have been hitting adults if I wasn't aware of what may happen to me if I did. I worked very hard not to get caught. I knew when I should and when I shouldn't do most things.

Today my kids and I went to Giordano's after they got out of school and we saw the Caillou approach on display. A couple had 2 boys between the ages of 4-7 with them. Both kids were banging on the windows with a knife and a fork. Father asked them to stop and both ignored him. Mother tried to take the fork out of the oldest child's hand and he hit her. They continued banging on the glass and pulling the blinds and the youngest boy eventually stood on the table. As much as they asked them to stop both of the kids ignored them and then the parents eventually just let them do what they wanted to do. I can honestly say I've never had that problem with my kids in a restaurant or anywhere else. The kids had absolutely no respect for them.

In the context of child abuse, it's disturbing. In the context of Harry Kalas intoning "Adrian Peterson has what he calls a 'whooping room'...we know it as the Metrodome," it's fucking hilarious.

That's before the new rules that Roger came up with a couple of weeks ago. Not to mention Roger saying fuck my new 6 game rule and banning Ray Rice for life.

True. Still the last person just about anyone would ever want to hit would be their mother. How to you hit your mother and not get disciplined for it?

If you knew when you should and shouldn't do most things why were you hit multiple times? You clearly understood right from wrong but sometimes chose to do the wrong thing even though you knew that doing so could result in being hit. If you understand the punishment associated with a behavior but still engage in that behavior then how is that punishment at all effective?
