I'm not wet blanketing this win. Going into SF it had to be a by any means necessary type of situation. We shouldn't be sucking off each other just yet though.

Jets, like the Bills, is going to be a tough game

I don't think so. The Bears gave the Bills game away. I doubt they will give another game away to the Jets.

in NY on MNF, that is not an automatic win scenario

Do you trust Geno Smith more in prime time or Cutler?

If the Bears are in New York for that game, they're very much assured to lose.

It's hard to believe that Geno Smith is a better option for the present than Vick.

I don't think he is.

Smith looked pretty bad to me trying to get a miracle at end of Packer game.

Isn't Rex Ryan coaching for a new contract? Why is he playing Smith instead of Vick? Seems pretty odd.

I believe they gave him new money this offseason. I believe it was 2 or 3 years.

early in the game i was marveling at how kaepernick consistently made just about every throw to a wide open receiver some sort of a difficult catch. accuracy is not his game. how hard is it to get a ball to michael crabtree / vernon davis in a 5-10ft bear-free bubble without making them jump or dive or do something heroic?

there was actually another game a few years ago where the bears played a team that had more penalties (18) than the niners had (16), and that was that one monday night football game against the packers @ soldier field. but this game was weird cuz it felt like the refs were putting on a show via the national game in the first half. you couldn't go more than 1-2 plays without 2-4 flags flying out, and despite all of the flags (and a review on the first SF touchdown) on that first SF touchdown they missed that kaepernick snapped that ball like 2secs after the playclock expired.... can't you review that?

and if you can't, didn't we have a game last year where they said "by rule the following play cannot be reviewed.... however we're gonna review it anyways" and it still screwed the bears?

ah well, definite "i'll take it" territory and just don't go spotting the jets 20pts early and you should be ok.

You would think a guy like Rex Ryan would definitely be playing Vick, the man with much better feet.

They mentioned last night that the comeback was the first time since the Denny Green game that the Bears came back from 17 points down.

The Bears are who we thought they were.

A legit NFC contender.

2 games. 6 points allowed in the second half total (3 per game...not counting overtime).
I legitimately wonder how many times that happened last year.

If it happens a third time, it's a trend.

That first series scared the shit out of me. Jay through the ball into the ground and I thought every Jay was going to do was about throwing it away if he didnt see it.

Its obvious the plan for that game was to run the ball , control the clock, etc. It just didnt work, they had to throw.

Happy they won, but lets just hold the applause.

Congrats to the D though.

Neither the Bears nor the 49ers will make the playoffs this year.

This was the Bears' season. They have started 0-2 18 times, and NEVER made the playoffs in that scenario.

The 49ers won't make the playoffs but they're still a good team. The Bears are better than some of you all think. That's the issue here.

I'm not so sure. I will say that the NFC West isnt the immovable object that people like to say they are.

Kaepernick seems to be getting worse with each game and, as someone else mentioned, he definitely has a confidence problem.

He hasn't had a great game since Week 2 or 3 of last year.

This, the bizarre game planning, the undisciplined play and loss of the locker room should have the big $$ alums in Ann Arbor concerned. Not to mention his inability to work with the GM that hired him.

Quote:
San Francisco entered the fourth quarter with a 20-7 lead over the Chicago Bears Sunday night…and most everyone assumed they would be able to seal the deal because the superior team almost always does that! In fact, we’d just watched an entire day of teams sitting on leads like that to grind out yawner victories.

BOOM! The Bears finished off an 80-yard TD drive with 13:35 left in the fourth quarter to make it 20-14. A few seconds later, it was 21-20 Chicago after a 3-yard TD drive off an SF miscue. Another cheap TD drive (42 yards) finished out the scoring in Chicago's 28-20 shocker.

There were a lot of concerns through the Preseason about offensive execution for San Francisco, and the general team mindset as head coach Jim Harbaugh seemed to be wearing out his welcome. That didn’t matter last week in Dallas…when it was the Cowboys imploding to give SF an easy victory. You’ll see below that San Francisco was actually pretty dominant outside the turnover category. Should have been a standard Harbaugh-grinder.

Chicago 28, San Francisco 20
Chicago: 216 yards, 4.2 per-play, 0 turnovers, 33% third downs
S. Fran : 391 yards, 5.6 per-play, 4 turnovers, 54% third downs

Throw out the turnover category, and that’s what San Francisco usually does at home! Well, sometimes they win the turnover category on the way to monster blowouts. Should have been a yawner at the very least.

Other Stats
Rushing Yardage: Chicago 46, San Francisco 129
Passing Stats: Chicago 23-34-0-170, San Francisco 21-34-3-232
Drive Points: Chicago 14, San Francisco 6
Stat Score: Chicago 12, San Francisco 22
Sloppiness: Chicago 11, San Francisco 33

(For you new visitors, Drive Points are those scored only on drives of 60 yards or more; Stat Score is a calculation of what the final score “should” have been based on the formula: 2 times rushing yards, plus passing yards, times 0.67, divided by 15; and Sloppiness is a quick assessment of sharpness based on 5 times the number of giveaways plus the number of incomplete passes. The lower the number, the better in sloppiness because you want to avoid being sloppy)

I don’t usually run penalty counts. But the fact that SF was flagged 16 times on a night where they were also losing the ball four times seems relevant. It’s hard to imagine a more poorly executed game from a playoff caliber team. Stat score says it should have been a double digit win. Though, Chicago did win Drive Points 14-6. Give Jay Cutler credit for finishing off a couple of long drives. SF had two long field goal drives, then a bunch of giveaways…against a Bears defense that graded out as one of the worst in the league last year.

Both teams are 1-1. Chicago’s actually in a four-way tie for first in the NFC North (Green Bay, Detroit, Minnesota also 1-1). San Francisco is still tied with Seattle thanks to the Seahawks loss today in San Diego. Arizona leads the NFC West with a 2-0 mark.

Did it feel to you like almost every game this afternoon was 24-10ish? Cincinnati/Atlanta landed right on that number. But, seven other games were within 10 points of it one way or another (26-10 for Dallas, 30-7 for new England, and so on). Make it eight for the week if you count Baltimore’s 26-6 win Thursday. Chicago/San Francisco was right there to be another one until that wild and crazy fourth quarter. Not exactly Red-Zone-errific. Karma frowning on all sorts of things in this sport right now.

Oh, I get it. The win shouldn't count because of the other factors. Just like you think Abreu's HRs shouldn't count because they "barely get over the wall"

Lots of stupid in that line of thinking.

Frank, no one said they don't count. Just an indicator he wouldn't keep pace.....which unsurprisingly.....happened!
The writer is simply looking at the game statistically and notes the a lot of unsustainble events occurred.

Let me ask you, do you think the Bears will force 4 turnovers and induce the opponent into 16 penalties every game?

What he's doing above isn't high level math but for some it may be. He's trying to pare out the noise to look for indicators of sustained success.
