What happened?

He's fantasizing again that Jordan Danks is a big leaguer.

Here are my thoughts about that. The guy allowed 8 baserunners in 7 innings, no runs. He certainly didn't pitch poorly. I guess you could say that he pitched well enough to win some other game that happened somewhere else at a different time. But he also threw 114 pitches through those seven innings which caused him to leave 6 outs uncovered. It is what it is. That's considered "quality" these days. Okay. It's not his fault the fielders and Gregerson blew the game. He just doesn't get credit for winning it.

But here's another thought regarding W/L record that goes beyond Samardzija. I'm pretty sure Whitey Ford has the highest career win percentage for a guy that didn't pitch in the 1800s. It's close to 70%. And I think Pedro would be next around 68%. If you're 55% for your career, you were a pretty good pitcher.

I realize the game has changed and guys aren't expected to go more than 6 or 7 innings. But that fact shouldn't hinder the win percentage of a top guy, but rather help it. You would think the best pitchers would almost never leave without the lead. So if a guy is really that good, he should have no chance to lose the majority of the games he's in. It's not like he can blow one himself in the eighth or ninth like Whitey could. I don't expect the top guys to win 20 anymore, but I do expect them to have high win percentages.

I'm on your side in this whole thing, Rodney. You can only control the innings you pitch. If Shark was better in the 7 innings he pitched and threw fewer pitches, maybe he goes 1-2-3 in the 8th and it's a different ballgame. Didn't Fergie win 25 games while losing 5 complete games 1-0? The only game that matters is today's game. I agree. The greats seem to be better than their opponents in the game that's played on that day. That's all that really matters.

I don't know off the top of my head, but I'm sure he might have. I think the whole concept of "run support" is based upon the fact that you have an entire generation of fans that may never have seen a 1-0 game. And now suddenly baseball is back to a more normal scoring environment, in fact a lower scoring environment than normal. Games aren't 13-8 much anymore. Everyday there are 2-1 and 1-0 games. And the starters on the short end of those games aren't usually the better pitchers.

It must be just coincidence that average to losing pitchers lose the majority of the 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 games while the good to great ones win them.

If Sale ends up at 15-3, with a sub 2 ERA, and over 200K in less than 190 IP (currently has 191K in 167 IP), does he get legitimate consideration for the Cy Young award?

I would think in the conversation.

For me, he's short on innings.

If he pitched a full season with a <1 WHIP, <2 ERA and ~2.5ish FIP with the best K/9 in the majors he should run away with it. But he didn't pitch a full season so it goes to Felix, and deservedly so.

Sale will finish 2nd or 3rd, depends on whether you value Sale's dominance or Kluber's innings? (Personally I'd go 1 Felix 2 Kluber 3 Sale)

The fact that Sale and Kluber weren't the first two pitchers after Felix in the ASG this year is an embarrassment, by the way.

Isn't it like 50 degrees in Chicago right now? Combine bad temps with meaningless September baseball and you could've had 500 people at the park.

Big Game James didn't bring his big game tonight. Still need to score 4-5 more with Danks on the mound.
