If Trestman went to Joe D for a quarter season eval and said, "Joe, what single play from Special Teams can you hang your hat on?", what would the answer be (aside from field goals)?

I'm honestly asking. Aside from field goals, I can't think of one meaningful, momentum-changing or stopping play ST has made. I can't even think of a decent return or a pinned punt. Maybe I'm forgetting some. I don't know, but I do know I would pay head coach numbers to get Dave Toub back.

The failed onside (which was a good call) got me thinking about this.

They blocked a FG to prevent losing by 24 at home. That's something they can build on.

Nothing. This guy is average at best. Bad hire, especially after Toub.

Same thing can be said about Mel Tucker. Tresty is my guy but he made a bad decision in hiring Mel & Joe. Hopefully both are replaced.

Here's my thought on this situation: the Bears are such shit on special teams, they should down it in the endzone literally every time, if possible. Off the top of my head, I can't think of an occasion where bringing it out resulted in better field-position. Maybe it happened once or twice. I'm not sure where to look for this, but I'd bet good money the Bears have started within their own 20 yard line after kickoffs more often than any other team. It's almost impossible that any other team has done worse in that respect. On kickoffs, the Bears either start at the 20, or worse.

Exactly. It seems that the smart thing to do would be to tell your kickoff team that you do not, under any circumstance, return a kickoff from the endzone. Period. If the kick is into the endzone, you take a knee & take it at the 20 yard line. This is what most teams did when kicks were from the 30. Regardless of the yard line that the ball is kicked from, why would teams change their philosophy on kicks into the end zone? Take the guaranteed 20 yards.

Hester.....

Snapper said a few weeks ago JoeD ran punt coverage that didn't maximize Hester's abilities. Shoot, Trestman couldn't maximize Hester's abilities. Dude is killing it.

It looks like punt and KO coverage has improved. The KO return no longer is much of a factor in the NFL because these kickers can knock it deep into or out of the endzone a lot of the time. No dynamic punt returners certainly has hurt.

The guys in the studio in England are KILLING the Bears for that play.

Even these blokes that have no idea what a football is know they suck.
