Went there for our anniversary last week.

The rib eye was more than marbled, it was actually kind of fatty. The Porterhouse was real good though. And they aren't shy with the cocktails. I would recommend it.

Nice neighborhood joint. The bar patrons usually strike me with their quite amusing clothing and jewelry choices.

Not a bad pre-United Center dinner place.

Carmichael's has always struck me as a place the builder of that development reserved for himself as a vanity project for until he got a big offer on the rest of the lot.

If you'd like I can confirm that theory for you. My childhood buddy owns that whole square block. Here's the story of how that entire neighborhood developed....

My friend's family owns Carmichael Trucking. That whole block of Monroe used to be one of their warehouses. Then around 1989 or 1990 they took one of the warehouses (the one that now houses the steakhouse) and converted it into a loft for my buddy to live in. PLace was amazing. Two story loft with a huge rooftop deck and hot tub. Also had the warehouse attached. As our first apartment in the city, our group of friend's were quite spoiled to call that our home in the city. We had some amazing parties there. At the time there weren't any other homes in the west loop, we had the only residence. The only other sign of life was the police station down the block and the occassional prostitute who would walk by on her way to the edge of the loop.

Then, much like a famous cow who kicked over a lantern and changed the city forever, a fire turned the west loop from a barren wasteland into what it is today. In the mid 90s one of the other warehouses on the property caught fire and burned to the ground. Carmichael trucking was left with a decision. Rebuild or tear it all down and build condos instead. Needless to say they went with the latter route. We were all pissed cause that meant the end of our condo/loft hangout. My buddy moved his family into one of the condos where he still lives. The rest turned into a gold mine as the condos spurred all the development in the area. Along with the condos they built the restaurant on the site of our hangout. You can still see how the building is the same, the second floor of the steakhouse used to be the kitchen/living room nad I think now its either for private parties or works as an office for the restaurant. The first floor was two bedrooms which were obviously gutted to make room for the restaurant.

As for the motivation for building the restaurant in the first place, I doubt the intention was to sell. I just think they are so loaded and they figured hey it would be fun to own a restaurant so they went ahead and did it.

They really did a fantastic job on the architecture of the townhomes. It is one of my favorite townhome developments.

I spent a lot of time on that particular block as a kid.

My father had a business in the last place to go condo, 1025 W Monroe. The F. Landon Cartage was the original owner of much of that block back in the day. The three walk ups on the north side of Monroe, just west of Morgan, are the only original buildings left on the block.

Formerly used the architects that occupied the front of the party space in the back building. One of the better unknown small/big rooms for any event in the city! Went to many a gig there!

My buddy's wife made a shirt that says "the black is the better scotch". It was a comparison of Johnny Walker Red and Johnny Walker Black, with a twist on Jimmy the Greek's thoughts on black athletes.

I'm going to miss the proximity of that place that I enjoyed for a decade. The finer dining concepts in the area of my new humble abode are defined by the Seashell's and Franconello's restaurants.

here is a pic of the back building/party room. Not attached to the dining establishment, but right out the backdoor, really a cool room, great for parties. Seen 2 record releases there, good bathroom facilites as well to handle the crowd!
