BILLY BEANE OBSESSION.

It's fun to mock Billy Beane and his hollywood story. I don't think anyone hates Billy Beane. It's just amusing that such a genius can't deliver what really matters while someone who was a source of mocking in the book(supposedly, I don't read) put a banner up.

It would be funny if people thought Kenny was the better G.M.

Not sure anyone thinks that

Billy Beane would trade every single one of his playoff appearances for a World Series championship.

As a fan, I'd rather have Kenny as the GM than Beane.

I think you'll find many who would take Beane.

Kinda like Dan Marino-Trent Dilfer

That isn't really a fair comparison. Marino gets a pass because he can't control the team he is on. A GM can.

If I gave you these two options for the next 10 years with Theo:
1) 8 playoffs appearances, no World Series appearance.
2) 1 World Series win, maybe one or two other playoff appearances.

You would be a fool not to pick #2. Billy Beane may be "better" at least for his situation, but Kenny is the more accomplished GM.

I'd take Beane over Kenny anyday. Beane couldn't really do more than he has done with his budgetary constraints. But I think the idea that the play-offs "are a crapshoot" is absurd. Is there more likely to be an upset over five games than there is in 162? Of course, especially in a game like baseball that is based on time and repetition. But the best team still wins the series most of the time. Or at least the team that is best at the time a series occurs.

The idea is to be able to point the team to a peak when it counts. Horse trainers do it all the time. You might beat me 6 of 7 but if the one time I beat you is in Kentucky on the first Saturday in May, well, that's what really counts. If Verlander pitches the way he did last night, Detroit will be tough to beat. He hasn't really had a great year, but he may be at his best now. I don't know if that's blind luck or what. But Verlander at his best is as good as anyone including Kershaw. Beane could have stood on his head and they weren't winning that game last night. Not because it's a crapshoot. Because the As aren't as good as Detroit.

I did find the decision to start a rookie instead of Colon rather curious.

i thought it was a good move. Colon has been good for sure, but i have absolutely no faith in him whatsoever to deliver in a big game

A GM controls about as much as a QB, I think

A GM controls everything though. Obviously, the players can fail to deliver, but the GM is the one that picked them to do the job.

So, option 1 or option 2?

It's not a relevant question to this discussion, because it presumes the GM controls all

It is relevant. We are talking about who is the more accomplished GM. We are both acknowledging that the more accomplished GM may not be the better one.

Ok, well I think a World Series is the ultimate goal, but I think who is better is more important than whose organization is more accomplished

Billy Beane puts together teams like the Bulls, teams built for regular season success.

I find it troubling that he doesn't wish to move to a less budgetarily constrained environment. The movie portrayed it as being due to family reasons but that daughter of his has to be in college by now.

Kenny is the more accomplished GM. John Schierholtz is the better GM of the 3. Billy a close second.

He should never change. Playoff results don't matter.

Im not sure anyone has called his results amazing or said playoffs dont matter.
So you get a book and movie because of good results? When do we get the Jim Hendry movie?

As soon as Phillip Seymour Hoffman has three months to film

To think it must have killed the A's, mgmt. and their "fans" to not be the lovable underfunded grindy team in their quick playoff exit this time.

Do we consider that collective a great GM?

At least he'll always have the World Series titles won by the Red Sox, which he had absolutely no part of but somehow got some credit?
