You guys still exist or have you started following MLB now?

Why do the rules for service time and arbitration clocks seem to pretty much suck for the players? Do they get any benefit or is this basically just a case of the owners and MLB players looking out for themselves.

It just seems strange that your own team can extend the years in which they have control of you by not putting you on the MLB club. It's basically giving incentive to your team to screw over the player as much as they can unless they want to win now. Why isn't it just like "You were drafted in 2010, you are under control of the team until 2017"?

I believe the NHL moved to an aged based system in their most recent contract. It is just one of those things that is collectively bargained. I agree it seems silly, but it is somewhat a function of when guys are ready. So if you draft high school players, they will sit in the minors longer than more established college player. Of course, teams game the rules to their advantage and keep guys from hitting free agency.

I think it might be similar to the NFL slotting system. It boils down to veterans not wanting young kids making more than them

Also its theoretically good for parody to keep Carlos Beltran on the Royals for 7 years

Doing it the way Rick suggests would virtually end the drafting of high school players.

Well, in that case, I'm sure a compromise could be made that gives a high school player an extra year or two.

Great players ultimately get paid, and decent veterans make nice coin too. It takes a while, but they get there. Highly drafted prospects get a signing bonus well before they prove anything.

It's nice to pretend that sports are a free market, but they're really not. In no other world are people drafted. The smartest guy graduating from Harvard does not have to enter a draft and be stuck with an employer until free agency. If pro sports operated like the rest of business, then the concept of a team could not exist. People would jump jobs in the middle of the season. The rules are weird, but sports could not operate in their current form without them.

It's good for parity, too.

That's why the Bryant thing puzzles and concerns me. If he's the next Mike Trout, he will get paid early and the attempts to extend control will be futile. I don't think Boras is going to let Bryant take an early, team-friendly Castro deal.

and, taking the team at face value, they will have Yankee-Dodger-Angel amounts of cash to spend well before he ever gets to free agency. Do you ever see a Yankee FA walking when the team wants to retain him?
