The problem with the extra length is that it is dead time. It is waiting for a guy to get into the box. It is endless pitching changes. It is mound meetings. None of that is enjoyable. I love the nuances of the game, but an extra 15-30 minutes every games is a lot of extra time over the course of a 162 game schedule.

Agreed. My entertainment is not increased by extra dead space.

It's not just that the games take longer to play, they take longer to start. Unforgettable finish the Royals had last night. I feel bad for the kids who couldn't stay up until midnight to watch it.

Or the adults who fell asleep in the 11th inning.

As for these rules, I don't really like them. Just allowing the intentional walk without the pitches is an innovation taken from the MVP Baseball video game where you could just tap one of the shoulder buttons and the umpire would award the batter his base. I would just do four pitchouts out of respect for the way the game is meant to be played, even in video game form. It would be like addressing the intentional fouls at the ends of basketball games by just awarding points without accounting for the fact that the guy might miss his free throws. Don't like it. Nor do I like limiting mound visits.

All the speed issues the game faces can be handled with rules already on the books accounting for delivering a pitch in due time with the bases empty or not allowing time to a hitter just because he asks for it. I suppose the only reason that that's not enough is because I can imagine the shitstorm the Red Sox would wreak on the commissioner's office if an umpire didn't call time for FACKIN' PEDROYER just because he didn't think he really needed it. They'd probably call Reinsdorf and have him try to arrange another coup to install Tom Werner.

I just think that most people that argue it takes to long, just probably aren't real baseball fans.

Precisely. MLB is marketing itself to people who hate their product while pissing off the people who love it.

When did the Republican Party take over MLB?

Dude, think about the Eastern time zone. Most shit doesn't even start until 9:00. I can either watch a whole game or not be miserable the next day.

The free throw analogy doesn't make any sense. I guess it would make some sense if 99.99% of all free throws were made, or if there was a wild pitch on 20-30% of intentional walks.

I consider myself a baseball fan but more of a Sox fanatic so I miss stuff in the larger picture. I agree with this and do not get it at all why it cannot be. Maybe Jorr or someone can quickly tell me how the zone got so tiny and why umps are not simply required to call the zone by rule or be fired?

Along the lines of what Denis was saying it is not the length of the game really. A good paced game will keep you watching for 3 hours. It is a 3 hour game with all the BS stops here and there that seems to drag forever. Perception I guess?

Ala Soccer. That will kill advertiser which ultimately pay the players these days more than fans in the seats.

The 3 hours aren't too bad. Makes it great for listening on the radio or relaxing on the couch on a lazy weekend. It's the 3 hours for 162 that's killer.

Disagree. During the inning changes they can run a few quick commercials over the broadcast. They can also provide inning sponsorships. The advertising would still be there.

Also, similar to soccer, set a max limit on pitching substitutions. The whole lefty-righty bullshit is annoying.

This. Now, bear in mind I've turned into a Fall Weather Baseball fan because I find it to be the hardest sport to follow not living in the Chicago market (unless I change allegiances and decide to Raise the Jolly Roger), so I watch the playoffs because I enjoy it.

In an odd way, you would think the dead time of baseball would appeal to people now - they can check twitter/facebook between pitches, etc. Hell, I usually watch while reading a book with much the same idea.

I am okay with all of these. None of them seem outrageous.

That would be the end of offense. Horrible

Any pitcher with control could throw a no hitter with ease

And that is why you don't allow the automatic intentional walk.
