He is making Javier Baez seem like a solid contact hitter.

Javier Baez also sometimes hit safely, with extra base hits.

He has had many "bad" at-bats. In the playoffs, you need to be able to get on base better...move guys over if possible.

I dont think they can win without Puig contributing.

Puig and Crawford are both 3 for 12

Gordon is 2 for 13

Gonzalez is 2 for 12

He's probably hurt somehow

No way I make out a lineup in a do or die game without Puig if I am Mattingly, I don't care how bad of a slump he is in.

Not playing him is the dumbest thing I've heard of this postseason yet.

Bat the kid 6th, even 7th or 8th ... take him out of any pressure hitting spot, not eliminate him entirely. It's not like he's a terrible hand in the outfield either. I'm sure they'll be fine with Crawford, Ethier, & Kemp ... I guess ... Ethier's arm by comparison is dreadful.

Besides, are you gonna bring in a guy who's given you 7k's in a row to pinch hit in a potentially season-ending game?

Stunningly bad.

Possibly. It's certainly an easy thing for management to point to, if they want to launch him, should there be any concerns about a fan backlash ... portraying this as a job-costing blunder is easy for people to consume in soundbites and on twitter and then gives them a couple of years to dick around with that team deciding if they still want to buy contenders or rebuild.

Ive got to strongly disagree. This move is bad, but you can make a case for it and its certainly nothing to fire someone over

Im betting there's an injury

With all the money being spent in LA, you would think Mattingly has to be on a very short leash now.

Two years on the job and he's won 92 and 94 and won the division in both years

He re-signed before this season. He'll get next year no matter what

Losing your last game of the season not playing your franchise's (presumed) future stud is something a high-school intern could spin into a PR piece as to why you let a guy go with a year left on his contract. Doesn't mean it necessarily makes sense; it's just something easy if someone gets a bug up their ass. Just because McCourt is gone doesn't guarantee stability in the Dodgers' front office either.

The whole Mattingly thing has to have worn its course in LA. Each year his Dodgers have gone through awful slumps & all kinds of clubhouse distractions. And then disappointed.

Having four well paid starting outfielders with one being the face of the franchise, who, along with the SS being headcases doesn't help. After each news cycle, Mattingly looks more and more irrelevant.

Each year?

You mean both division winning years?

You guys are crazy.

I think they'll let him have a season of less than 92 wins before they fire him

There were rumors they were going to fire him last year, they have FU money. If they want him gone, he will be.

Yeah, that was when they were awful and in last place his frist two months on the job. Then they turned it around and have won at a .650 clip ever since

Im not arguing that they cant afford to fire him. They can. They wont unless something drastic (more than sitting Puig) happens.

Perhaps. But Bulls fans said something similar just after Crumbs & the Chairman fired Doug Collins. Certain star players (i.e. MJeff) had tuned Doug out, despite the team making noticeable progress. I'm sure Stan Kasten & Magic are thinking about this.

Similarly, Mattingly doesn't seem like a "Point B to Point C guy".

IIRC they were also right around .500 until just after Memorial Day & the knives were out again. Yet another slow start.

The Dodgers need a guy who yells alot. Is Lou Pinella available?

Maybe George O'Farrell?

With a $238 MM payroll, you shouldn't have to.

As I said, crazier things have happened and you can never predict anything when you have extremely wealthy owners, but there is really no justification for firing him.

Its not like talent automatically equals 90 wins. Give the guy some credit.

What are you saying?

You're saying that winning the NL west and 93 games isnt good enough?

What do you need? 110 wins?

At that price point, he's only going to get credit when the Dodgers actually win something. This isn't the Cubbies you know. :P
