Finally win the Orton versus Cutler argument today. Orton with Buffalo comes behind by two TDs against one of the league's best defenses in Detroit on the road to edge out an upset by 3, 17 - 14. Cutler, on the other hand, blows a 2 TD lead needlessly and stupidly by throwing a wild pass high over the middle when he didn't have to throw at all. Could have just run the ball and punted and the Bears were still up by 3 with field position on their side and 7 minutes left on the clock.

Not a Cutler apologist, but he did engineer a similar comeback against a better defense in week two. Not sure what the argument is here unless you're still arguing with someone who died in 2010. This was Orton's first non spot start in something like two to three years.

Instead of trading Orton, the Bears could have not traded for Cutler AND cut Orton and it would have been the better move. The time and money wasted on Cutler is worse than the loss of Orton.

The argument really ended when the Bears stupidly signed him to this contract in the offseason.

I'm a big Orton fan but he had his chances too. I guess if we've been waiting for Cutler to finally figure it out maybe we can still hold out hope for Orton.

It would be fascinating to see what Orton would do in the Trestman offense.

Take it easy, Spock. Losing isn't that fascinating.

I'm not looking it up, but doesn't the Orton/Grossman era have a better winning percentage than the Cutler era?

Yes their era does have a better winning percentage. Cutler has a pretty good winning percentage in the games he has started IIRC.

Cutler's career mark is 58-51. Over 500 yes, but not exactly brag worthy.

The argument goes back to when they traded Orton and two 1st round draft picks for Cutler. Dumbest trade the Bears ever made. And now 4 years after the fact Orton has showed himself to be the better quarterback. He's been with Buffalo 5 weeks and beats Detroit with a top 5 defense in week 5.

Orton deserved a lot more credit than he received from the Bears when they let him go so cheaply. Again, he's the only Bears quarterback to complete passes to Hester, which is no small accomplishment.

I would say the dumbest trade the Bears have made is the Gaines Adams deal. Not because Adams is dead, but he was in no way, shape, or form worth a second round pick.

Agreed. I don't believe anyone here thought that was a good trade. His death made it worse.

Orton was solid under 20 yards. Looking back now it's clear he and Grossman had crap to work with on offense beyond Thomas Jones and Dez Clark.

He was showing good signs of improvement his last year here and he obviously met that potential the next year in Denver.

However, he failed to improve and actually regressed after that. Unfortunately, I think he never really had the dedication to football that you need to be very good to great. That is why I'm excited to see what he does in Buffalo. This is truly his last real shot to be anything more than another Brian Griese.

Looking back? Who didn't know it was a team replete with dogshit personnel at the time?!? It was just assumed and accepted.

As a Cutler guy I have to admit with the ass end of Lovie and the coordinator carousel then with Trestman's work with McCown I have to admit Orton would have taken us as far as Cutler. Maybe minus the Packers playoff game.

Orton was virtually out of the league after the trade. You have no idea what you're talking about.

He went from youngish prospect in Denver to highly paid and well regarded backup to "oh, he's still in the league?!?" in the years immediately following the trade.

That is just because Tony Romo played well and stayed relatively healthy.

He certainly wasn't virtually out of the league.

Come on Rick. I got love for Orton in general but I don't think he was targeted by any team to be a starter for nearly five years in a league which sees about 15 teams annually suffer a QB crisis. I can name several teams right now from memory over the past two years that I don't recall making a concerted effort to acquire Orton in the same way guys like Flynn, Fitzpatrick, Smith, and Schaub were targeted to fill or compete for starting QB spots:

Minnesota
Cleveland
Arizona
Jacksonville
Oakland
Buffalo (until now I guess, as a stopgap though)
NYJ
St Louis
KC
Houston
Tampa Bay
Tennessee

He was in Dallas for two years and started half the season the year before we got Tebowmania and then the Chiefs got him and started him. Orton chose a place where he could either hold a clipboard or be put into a situation where he had a chance to succeed. The Cowboys had no desire to trade him.

He had multiple teams interested in him as soon as he got out of Dallas and him becoming the starter in Buffalo was a foregone conclusion the moment he signed. The Bills gave him $6 million.

As I said though, "virtually out of the league" is just flat out incorrect. The lowest point of his whole career has been being a high paid backup who once again is starting.

I benched Aaron Rodgers in my championship matchup and Orton delivered. Orton and Grossman have won me more titles than Rodgers.
