I get so tired of hearing Joe Buck suck the cock of any team that is playing or beating the Cardinals.

Some examples from social media:

Why do you pull a pitcher that was still throwing good? Matheny thank you for throwing away these last 2 games...

I hope we hear Mike Matheny take absolute responsibility for his bone-headed decision not to go with Maness in that situation. The guy is a ground-ball machine (think double-play gets you out of the inning).
And tomorrow, Matheny should seriously consider resigning for what will be a tough pill to swallow for Michael Wacha for years to come. All the signs were there, all the indications were clear to see. Good leadership considers stepping aside at this point.

It's official I'm not a Matheny fan!! Leave your horse in! This series is in this position bc of you!! You have a man crush on the bullpen, it cost you!!

Some are, some aren't. Lumping them all in together based on the most vocal idiots segment isn't.

Also, all pitchers should be judged solely on their W/L records.

Sorry FootballTeamGreg, and Lipid. It should be a hellava World Series, yet I still have a feeling that KC is gonna sweep yet again. 12-0 postseason run might be a once in a lifetime event.

 One time I was down in St. Louis for a game and I sat behind one of those famous fans. Sort of like a river rat Ronnie Woo Woo. This broad's name was Lucy. And she kept leading these obnoxious chants. Like when a Cardinal would foul off a two strike pitch with two men on she would start up: "AH AH AH AH STAYIN' ALIVE! STAYIN' ALIVE!" And then she would say again "STAYIN' ALIVE!" And the goofs in the section around her would reply "TWO RBI!!!!!" She ate a chicken dinner like a fucking savage. It was like an animal attacking that bird. Then two young guys were rooting for the Dodgers and she tried to have them thrown out. I asked the security guy if you aren't allowed to root for the visitors at Busch Stadium. Fuck Lucy the Cardinal Fan.

I'm not sure if this is directed at me, but just in case, I'll point out that I've never said anything even close to that.

However, at the risk of repeating myself, I will explain once again why winning percentage tells you more about a starting pitcher by itself than other statistics. Let's take an 18-6 record, for example. That's a .750 winning percentage. If you went 18-6 in 1902, that was good. If you went 18-6 in 1929, that was good. If you went 18-6 in 2008, that was good. You get the picture. Now let's take an ERA of, say 4.50. In 2014, that wasn't too great. In 1930, it was pretty damn awesome. In 2000, it was plenty good. W/L record is just not subject to conditions the way the other numbers are.

Yes it is. It is subject to the skill of the 24 other players on your team. Especially the offensive skill of the 8 or 9 players in the lineup that day.

That is a whole lot of variables. Variables that are uncontrollable to the pitcher.

We've gone over this a million times. In the VAST majority of games the difference in the average run-scoring by the two teams is only a fraction of a run, something which cannot be scored in a single game.

And a pitcher doesn't "control" anything except where he throws the ball and the way he throws it. He affects certain things and his effect is eminently greater than all the other players in the game with the lone exception of the other staring pitcher.
