It looks like Rosenthals mechanics are different. The deception between the fastball-change relies heavily on release point. The curve looks like it's messing up his release point on the other pitches

I think of Rosy as in the Isringhausen tier of closers... good, not great and will have the occasional absolute shit outing. He's a lot better than Franklin, very similar to Motte, probably not as good as Worrell, and nowhere near as terrifying to opposing batters as Lee Arthur or Sutter

When the Cardinals make the playoffs is when I try to stop reading my Facebook front page. Insufferable.

The Cardinals are about to appear in their 7th NLCS since the Cubs last won a playoff game. 4th since the White Sox last won a playoff game.

That is such a sad indictment of Chicago baseball its not even funny.

Every year this team looks like it will be just kind of average. Every year they hang around then peak at the right time. This is through multiple administrations on ownership, administration and management levels. There is something about that cowtown that makes baseball good.

Yeah, its insane

I used to think Jocketty was a great GM and LaRussa/Duncan were perfect in their roles but all those guys have been gone for years now and they just keep on keeping on

They are insane at developing players. Matt Carpenter was not supposed to be this.

It's awful. Hell Sosa couldnt even beat McGuire in the HR chase. It just sucks because St Louis is such a piece of shit.

It will make it that much sweeter when the Cubs topple them.

One of my favorite baseball memories. Followed a month later by my worst baseball memory. The more I watch playoff baseball the more I really think that 2003 killed my spirit. I havent been the same fan since.

The Cardinals won't make any qualifying offers, and it's likely that they won't retain any of those five free agents. Ellis and Pierzynski are nearing -- or perhaps at? -- the end of their careers. The non-waiver Trade Deadline deal that brought in Masterson proved to be a bust for the Cardinals. Motte, a lifetime Cardinal, is at a crossroads after struggling in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. And Neshek, with a stupendous season, likely priced himself out of the Cardinals' bullpen plans.

Likely gone (2014 salary):

RHP - J. Masterson_____$3.27*
RHP - J. Motte________$7.5MM
RHP - P. Neshek_______$1MM
IF - M. Ellis___________$5.25MM
BUM - T. Wigginton____$2.5MM (yes, they were still paying him)
C - AJ. Pierzynski______$200k*

* Prorated salary paid by STL. Masterson and Pierzynski were on contracts from former employers

You know what I love about this as a fan? (and wanna-be GM on Playstation)

3 position players were developed elsewhere.
Holliday - big-time trade and re-up. Jason Bay was the the other big OF slugger on the market. That didn't work out so well for NYM.

Peralta - Big money FA; obvious glaring hole at SS (Kozma!)

Bourjos - We had to get something out of Anaheim. He's fine as a 4th OF/PR/Defensive replacement

1 Starting Pitcher was developed elsewhere.
Lackey. He says he intends to honor the $500K option. Veteran grit that Matheny likes, could see him getting a $5-10MM "Bonus"

1 Reliever was developed elsewhere.

Choate was a FA, and as a LOOGY, if you use him as a LOOGY, he's fine.

The rest of the roster came up through the system. Player development!

Cardinals will try to trade Randy Choate this offseason

The Cardinals gave Randy Choate a three-year, $7.5 million contract in December of 2012 to be their left-handed specialist, but Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the club “will look to move” him this offseason.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak indicated as much in his comments to the media today, during which he said Choate was “very specialized” and that it was difficult to give him proper work during the season.

“I think we both feel that if we can upgrade there or have an additional arm to choose from, that makes sense,” Mozeliak said. “We’re certainly not ruling out Siegrist. I think in Choate’s case, for us, he’s fairly one-dimensional. That makes it difficult for us to use him, particularly during a long season.”

Choate posted a 4.50 ERA over 61 appearances this season, but he held left-handed batters to an .093/.205/.147 batting line. The 39-year-old clearly has value, but it will be interesting to see who will be willing to pay $3 million to someone who has averaged just 36 innings over the past six seasons.

I'd be surprised if they can get anything of note for him.... seems like more teams might be desperate for LH bullpen help around the deadline.

I still think he's good

When I put that in past tense, I meant I used to think he was THE THING with the Cards

Well the Sox went weeks without a left hander in the bullpen so if he's on the block they should be the first team in line.

If Hahn is concerned about paying $3MM for a 39 year old lefty, he could sweeten the offer, the Sox seem to have a glut of middle infielders...
